Reader: AirPort Base Station firmware warning

updated 09:10 pm EST, Thu January 17, 2002

A MacNN reader warns that some users may experience problems with the AirPort Base Station firmware upgrade included in the AirPort Driver 2.01 update. "Just got off the phone with Apple. [I] ran the software update which set up a firmware update on my graphite base station. It killed my base station, so our friends in Cupertino are sending me a replacement base station. Be careful with the upgrade."

    Just say no

Airport updates from Apple have been miserable of late. Don't update unless you really need to.

I updated a client's graphite basestation to 2.0 because he used AOL, but have keep mine at 1.3.1 and have no intention of upgrading as the features I need, including assigning NAT addresses over Ethernet and USB printer sharing, are all working as is.

Before you update, read the user comments at versiontracker.com first. Apparently this latest update for the card's firmware can kill your Airport card as well as your basestation.

    update! update!

As long as Apple sends you a free replacement, why not update, if it hoses your equipment, you'll get a new one and maybe Apple will be more careful about their updaters.

    re:update!update!

You are presumably a non-professional user who can afford to wait whilst Apple fannies around getting you a replacement base station.

    Worked great for me

Just like Mike said, update, reboot, upload, and voila.
