c|net: luxury PCs back in style?

c|net has posted an article that takes a look at what may be a new trend in computer purchasing. The report says consumers are buying PCs with large memory and storage allotments, flat-panel displays and DVD-recorders. The average price of a Compaq computer has risen by 6%, according to executive vice president of Compaq Computer's global business units. The release of the latest iMac echoes this trend, with the high-end model expected by Apple to be the top seller.

    wait, i'm confused...

But I thought consumers "didn't trust computer makers" anymore and were looking for low-end, bargain computers? Which is right?

    Stupid Consumers

They don't trust anybody because they bought the low end and found out how bad it sucks.

This article is a little hokey.

I'd say the lowered price of components is not just *a* reason for the purchase of higher-end equipment (esp. w/ regards to hard drives, flatpanel displays, and RAM), it's *the* reason.

It's certainly not some "shift in consumer habit" as the article suggests.

    If they're buying Macs

good for them. If they're buying PCs with Windows they're buying privacy-stealing paperweights no matter what the RAM, HD space, or display type.

    I don't get it!!!

I have a friend who bought a 1.6GHz (or something like that) P4/Windows XP system just to surf the web! Is that overkill? Wintel world brags and brags and brags about the speed of the processors, but I honestly couldn't imagine how fast my system would be if there were a 1.6GHz G3 in it! With a 500MHz G3 in my iBook I can surf the web, rip cd's, work on digital photographs, make movies, play dvd's, write my own programs ... albeit, some of these tasks could use a little more horsepower to maybe work a bit faster, but it's still a very capable system at only 500MHz!!! Now Apple released the new iMacs running 700MHz and 800MHz G4's!!! Which is a very smart move, considering how graphics intensive Mac OS X is and will benefit from the Altivec units on the G4. As will all the digital "iApps" that are bundled with Apple's systems.

Are PC users just brainwashed into believing they need these high end systems for every day tasks. Are they mainly used by gamers who need all that power so the blood looks more real? Or does Windows XP tax the CPU that much? It's becoming a bit ridiculous...a 2.4GHz P4!?! What on earth would Joe Consumer need that for?

Who uses a sledgehammer to hammer a nail into the wall to hang a picture?

We are moving from PC as a internet access tool to computer as a media center system. So, Joe Consumer will not be surfing the internet only, Joe will be editing his 2 year old's video.
