    Are they on crack?

SonicBlue's web site describes the Riot as a USB device. It's disgraceful that such an inferior product would get an award while the iPod is ignored. Typical of those damn peecee-centric shows; anything Apple-related is systematically ignored.

    Pathetic

This piece of c*** is the perfect antithesis of the iPod.

    firewire

Apparently, from the TechTV article, the Riot does have FireWire (or it's at least an option?). Add to that the 20GB capability and a price tag that matches the iPod, and it seems to add up. I'm sure it's significantly larger than the iPod, and may or may not be functional as a FireWire drive, but it seems like a decent player.

    It's not bad

It definitely gives the iPod a run for it's money. It has USB and FireWire (only Apple would exclude USB entirely from such a device) and a drive 4x the capacity of the iPod. It also looks like it has a nice interface. Now, if it can recharge using the FW connection that would really be something. No word on that. It does appear to be much bulkier though. I'd say that's really the deciding factor here. What's more important, more storage or less girth? It's up to the consumer, not everyone is going to feel the same way about it but the good news for us is, we have options. Options are good. Competition is good. Competion from the iPod has pushed Rio to create this very nice device. Competion from this device and others will push Apple to improve the iPod. Bigger hard drives, more features, lower price. It's all coming.

    Maybe not

TechTV claimed it sports USB and FireWire but the Sonicblue website mentions only USB. I can't imagine the makers of this machine not realizing that it comes with FW so I'm going to guess that TechTV got it wrong. In that case, it's really not so appealing. Holds 400 complete albums? Well, by the time you finish uploading them, a 100GB iPod will be shipping so it doesn't really matter anyway.

Also, their site doesn't say anything about how big it is which can't be a good sign.

And that Compaq Evo looks like c*** too. No comparison to the new iMac at all. I guess the iMac and iPod didn't make it to CES? Either that or I'd say the boys at Tech TV are a bit biased against Apple.

And if they weren't featured at CES... What's Apple's problem? Get out there and show off your stuff! You're preaching to the choir at MacWorld. Do you want that other 95% or not?

Why wasn't Apple at the CES? They were throwing their own party in San Fransico that week...

    CES

best of CES, now they are a somewhat PCentric site of course, but Apple wasnt even at CES so the iPod wouldnt win the bloody thing if it wasnt there now would it? (in a perfect world perhaps)

    Big sucker

Saw the show, and yeah, it's a big one. If anyone remembers the Atari Lynx, it's about that size. They didn't say whether it recharged via Firewire, and doesn't seem to have the close integration with a MP3 player (which is the coolest thing about the iPod for me). It supports WMA as well as MP3. Navigation features seem on a par with the iPod with one interesting feature: it remembers the songs you listen to most, and builds a list of favorites.
