c|net: MS security push lacks oomph

Microsoft's security initiatives and the release of the company's "most secure operating system yet" still leave a lot to be desired when it comes to security, according to a c|net. The company has failed to squash several serious security bugs that "put customers in harm's way." Two major security hole discoveries have left security experts questioning Microsoft's ability to fortify it's products against hackers. Microsoft itself characterized a recent flaw as "critical."

    Arenīt windows users....

Microsoft is so rich and have very huge resources for developing their software, and still after Windows 95, 98, NT, 2000, XP they still have serious security issus in the their OS. The stranges part is that people and companys is still installing and using their OS. Arenīt windows users more faithful to their OS than Macuser ?????

    Zero bulletins?

There's a very revealing quote in the article:
Lipner said. "But our objective is to drive the number of (security) bulletins to zero."

That doesn't equal driving the number of security holes to zero, does it? MS has already once accused the folks who disclosed a hole of making the exploit possible; I wouldn't be surprised to see them going into "kill the messenger" mode instead of actually fixing the code.

    who cares

I don't use windows. For those who do its just the risk they take. You can't leave a win2k machine exposed to the internet without getting code red, nimbda within an hour. Its that iis server and active x. Massive holes in win xp. Unsuspecting users buying new computers with the hole. Goverment agencies and companies risking important information.

Now add active x controls. Anybody could just start a company goto verisign and sign their active x control. Now they can read you hard drive and documents.

Windows is out of control but everyone is in on that ponzi scheme. Who cares. I don't use it.

    Glosses over the fact

that the UPnP vulnerability in Windows XP is present in Windows ME and the 3+ year-old Windows 98. So much for Windows XP being "based on the Win2k kernal", etc. Windows XP is more like Windows ME Second Edition.
