iBook helps, but sales only satisfactory

Bloomberg.com reports that Apple's European sales are "Good, But No More," according to the computer maker. Slightly better sales over the previous holiday season are said to be thanks to strong sales of iBook laptops. Earlier this week, the company unveiled a totally revamped iMac at the MacWorld Expo in a bid to boost sales. Shares of Apple have fallen since the announcement, but analysts attribute this to concern over December sales. "We didn't see the classic spike in sales we usually have for Christmas."

    Well, duh!

Gee, the world economy in recession and Apple's sales aren't spectacular. Wow!

I wonder if Bloomberg is reporting all the other computer manufacturers having lackluster sales?

    hah

Sales are good but nothing more eh? With millions of jobs being lost I am sure there are many many MANY people who would LOVE to buy a new computer, but cant. That is not a problem caused by Apple.

    It's the Economy, Stupid

Geez, where has Bloomberg been the last, oh, say, year? Apple had sales GROWTH. WHOA! Can we say that big word... G-R-O-W-T-H. Meanwhile, overseas, Dell, Compaq, hp... They're all expecting no growth, to, perhaps, a decline.

    Geez. So sad.

    Europe

Ehr, a slight correction here ... it's not the world that's in a recession (yet). At this moment, only the US has a recession. Economic growth is still in a postive line in Europe, allthough that growth is slightly declining.

I'm not suprised that sales in Europe are only "Good", but they could be better if Apple Computer changed it's "US-centric" behaviour and pays more attention to other users around the world. The complete lack of Apple Stores and now the iPhoto-service won't help help Apple to become a bigger player, as current Mac-owners feel themselves left in the cold every time.

    Europe

Cheapest iMac in Europe is EU 1934 (almost $2000) and the top model with the superdrive is EU 2660 ($2.800). Ibook is equally expensive.

    Europe

US-centric is the right word. Prices for Mac hardware are a lot steeper here in Germany than in the US (Though I do not generally have a problem with high prices, I am ready to pay for high quality, it's just that they are so much higher than in the US) But that is not the only problem:

Mail in OS X marks all my words with that ugly red line because the OS X builtin dictionary only supports English, even though Mac OS X easily supports multiple languages.

iPhoto won't allow me to upload my Photos to my mac.com account, only available when I set its language to English (why?)

iPhoto won't allow me to order prints of my photos if I live outside the US (Again why? A quick glance at www.kodak.de tells me they support online ordering, too)

Don't get me wrong, I like Apple's offerings, it is just that you feel like a second class citizen as soon as you switch to another language than English. Apple should do more to satisfy non-American customers should they wish to increase their market share outside the US.

    European Support

... is on it's way. Apple has already stated in public that support is not there yet in order to plug more leaks in the iPhoto announcement.

    Heard of Marketing?

"We're surprised that our European sales aren't spectacular, without running any TV campaigns in most countries, without competitive pricing strategies, without any fancy retail stores and without services such as iPhoto's, yet available in that area."

"We might have to resort in creating a Marketing and Sales strategy for Europe"

    gee what a surprise

although the european economies are not yet in such a bad state as the US, sales are somewhat unsatisfactory?

Small wonder: european marketing has been centralized with the effect that localized advertisements are just plain dorky ("your life to go" cannot be just translitered into german it sounds ridiculous). Prices are higher than in the US, although (at least in Germany) PC-prices are actually lower. Support is just S*****, there are no stores, there are no incentives to buy Macs and Apple does care s*** about the European educational market (yeah, we have schools over here too *G*) thereby losing future customers.

As a consequence, market share is next to 3% over here and declining.

Would Jobs think about _ever_ giving the prices of new hardware in his keynotes not only in USD but also EUR? A pipedream? Maybe, but considering the size of the euro-zone, he'd better think about doing...

    Europe could be BIG

If any demographic were to appreciate Apple's style, its the europeans, but Apple MUST start to really push over there, like filming some Euro centric TV commercials, and maybe even opening one flagship store in places like London, Paris, etc.
