According to ZDNet Shopper, Apple's new iPod digital music player is the third most popular MP3 player among online buyers. This list represents "the 50 most popular mp3 & audio products ZDNET users are looking for." Many enthusiasts and analysts have been surprised and impressed by the success of the iPod with Apple selling about 125,000 units in the first 60 days of production.

    How tracked?

I am guessing ZDNet tracked clicks on the links. Very nice to know, but of course doesn't necessarily translate to sales.

BTW, isn't that iPaq a PDA?

    Reassuring

It's reassuring that a good product can still sell despite a concerted effort by the pro-Wintel industry to badmouth it.

There were quite a few articles that MacNN referenced that claimed the iPod was "the least desirable gift for Christmas" ... the "an overexpensive gimmick" ... "Apple's next Cube failure" etc, etc.

But possibly more people are learning to see through these manipulative articles and just buy what they believe to be a well thought-out product.

h***, with even hardcore Linux users working out how to access an iPod through FireWire drivers, you know it maybe not just a "flashy example of style over substance."

With Mediafour's XPlay coming to Windows, maybe even some of the less-blinkered PC users will be switched on to iPod and sales will take off even more.

    it's about time...

after years of Mac users having to pay extra for peripherals that often were nothing more than rebadged versions of the identical Windows product, it's only fair that Windows users now have to pay extra to use "our" MP3 player. :)

    this is great

First "personal " player I've owned in 15 years. I had an original Walkman and this iPod is as "breakthrough" as the Walkman was.

    Very amazing

What's really striking about the iPod sales is that it placed 3rd in sales, with no official windows support! That's an accomplishment that Apple should be proud of.

Now if Windows support is ever added to iPod, it will probably sell even better. But my guess is that Apple will not support Windows, especially now that this support is available from other parties. If the iPod is so damn good that people are willing not only to pay more for it than for other MP3 players, but also pay extra for Windows compatibility software, then this says something about Apple's quality of design and manufacture.

The iPod is a lure, exactly like those used by fishermen, except the fisherman is Apple, the bait is iPod, and the fish are Windows users.

Another strategy Apple could use that would be very cool, is to offer windows support, but make the windows support suck really hard. Don't just leave out features, but have the windows software notify the user when they try to use an unsupported feature, "THIS FEATURE IS ONLY AVAILABLE TO MACINTOSH USERS!" LOL, this would be awesome. And just for kicks, Apple could purposely include lots of bugs in the windows version of iTunes; bugs that not only crash iTunes, but the entire Windows XP OS. LOL, that would be great.

I thought of that, because I'm convinced M$ does this to Mac users. Their apps are so loaded full of bugs, and are always fu[king my S*** up. Funny how it's only M$ apps that do this, while other complex apps written on a budget by smaller developers never seem to muck with my system, and they don't crash often at all. But M$, with an army of programmers, can't do the same. Yeah, right.

I'm really pissed now more than ever that Dubya's lawyers and his dad's little b****, Bakker, stole the 2000 presidential election. If this hadn't happened, then the justice department would have continued to pursue the M$ case with extreme prejudice. Now that the White House is run by oilmen and corporate executives, forget about the administrative branch doing anything with the interest of consumers in mind. b*******.

If Apple did this they would be no better than Microsoft because Bill Gates and his illegally-run monopolistic cartel do this all the time. So no thanks. Apple can succeed honestly based on the quality of their products. I wouldn't want it any other way.

    funny $#!†

funny they don't think its a "con" for the iPaq not to have mac support but its a "con" on the iPod not to have PC support.

BTW, I love my iPod. some people at work are actually thinking of buying a iMac or iBook just to use the iPod!

    keep wiggling that bait apple!

    there's something...

there's something very liberating about being able to hit "shuffle" and have any of 700 songs play for me... and even MORE liberating is that i can replace every single song on it in just a few minutes... AND still have nearly a gig of remaining storage with which to tote projects to and fro work...

that's why my iPod was MY number one purchase for the year...

but to suggest (even jokingly) apple even BOTHER writing software to sync up to Windows is just silly. i'm soooo happy that mediafour accepted that task... THEY are the ones who are going to have to deal with all the tech calls when the XPlay software "doesn't work" because of a poorly/improperly configured computer... i hope they make a fortune off the software because they really do deserve it. everybody wins if their product is successful.

    Whoa...

Also, the iPod is the most expensive of the top ten. Neither number one or ten are close. In relativity, Apple is, not only selling more units than most of these other companies, but they're probably also making more money.

And the really cool thing? It's Mac ONLY. How do you like them Apples? ;-)
