BBC provides explanation of QuickTime stream

updated 10:45 am EST, Fri January 11, 2002

Michael Levenston forwarded a note from BBC explaining the discontinuation of its QuickTime live stram:

"The live streaming of BBC World using Apple's QuickTime TV has ceased. The streaming of the channel began originally as a trial in conjunction with Apple QuickTime TV and was popular with viewers across the world. Nevertheless, the costs associated with streaming a 24/7 channel, have proven to be unsupportable by our Apple partners. As such, Apple has found it necessary to withdraw BBC World from their QuickTime TV offering of channels...BBC World is however still available, on trial, as a 24/7 stream using Microsoft Windows Media Player at www.windowsmedia.com, clicking on 'News' and then select the appropriate feed. BBC World will continue to investigate the viability of streaming the channel in a number of formats."

    :-( Another forgottentech

Apple's QTTV moves were sound ones, and did lots to help advance the platform. it's a shame to see them forget about it so easily.

    Translation

Micro$loth is picking up all the costs associated with streaming BBCA (software, servers, bandwidth, facilities) as long as the Beeb uses it exclusively. There's no other possible explanation, since the bandwidth and facilities being used for WMA could be shared by QT servers, the only remaining cost being that of Apple servers (but they already had them: how could they have been streaming QT otherwise?) and Apple software (free).
It would be nice to hear what Apple has to say about it; call me paranoid but I see Bill's handywork here...

    Oops

This is like Apple back when they fired all the evangelists and then MS snatched up the concept and made it work. So here again, Apple drops the ball. Gee, we can't afford to prove to the world that our QT Streaming works, so we'll let MS prove that theirs does (except for Mac users of course) in our place.

Um, Steve, it's called a loss-leader... kind of like all the retail stores you're opening.

    BBC is *not* MS sucker

Anyone making even a cursory glance at BBC news will note that almost everything there is in Real format. BBC World was the only thing, I was aware of, that was not in Real format.

    advanced options

Even on stuff that was in QT format, I had to select "advanced options" to enable QT as default #1, WPA as #2 (no RMP for X yet). Lots of bait-and-switch in being sent to other sites, ads for stuff that then requires more work, wading through links and other movie stuff.

Lets hope QuickTime 6 makes an impact.

    QT 6

IT will, but not in this way. Check out www.creativemac.com for a good conversation with director of QT. It's going to be all MPEG4.

    QT 6?

Maybe they'll pick up broadcasting again once QT6/MPEG4 is out. I was actually expecting Jobs to announce QT 6 during the Keynote, but no.

    Please bring BBC QT back!

I really miss having BBC QuickTime steam. It was the only QuickTime stream I would watch. The audio only (when working in the background) was an excellent service I enjoyed at work. I hope Apple (and other forces) can encourage the BBC to resume this service. Must also write to the BBC directly!

    It was all a lie

Well, 11 months on, we all know the BBC was lying through their crooked, rotting British teeth about the reasons for the QT stream disappearing. They yanked it in order to *charge* for it through RealOne. And not just regular, American RealOne, but the special *British* version only, for which you will pay $15/mo ABOVE AND BEYOND the $10/mo you pay for the US version of RealOne.

And yes, of course the Windows Media stream is also long long gone.
