An OSOpinion article surmises that Apple's recently introduced flat-panel iMac "lives up to the hype." Author Mike Banks Valentine says "What is stunning is not the adoration at introductory shows, but the fact that sales figures of 6 million iMacs over the last three years fails to impress the press," and compares the new iMac's hyperbole to the automotive industry.

    as a shareholder it was great to see the apple-generated hype. that kind of publicity simply can not be bought (not even by M$) and the backlash of a few thousand disappointed mac-watchers is par for the course. it's disappointing to see the 'press' loose that perspective: to most of the world, apple hardly even exists and there it is, boom, on the cover of time. excellent.

    that said, I think the iMac is ugly, it does NOT, in any way, shape or form, look like a lamp, let alone that luxo thing. anyone who says so is nuts.

    hey back off with the personal insults, you. whether or not something look like a lamp is not a matter of OPINION. show me a lamp that looks like half a soccer ball with a 15 inch plane stuck on top and i will take back my harsh words. meanwhile, the new imac does NOT look like any lamp.

    I'd say the look and function of the connecting arm on the new iMac is what is most lamp-like. Also, IKEA has a desktop lamp with a base much like the iMac (not as large as the iMac's, but it's proportional).

    Anyway, how you see it is completely subjective, and thus is simply an opinion. Enjoy clinging tightly to yours.

    It did get a picture and article on the most-widely read broadsheet newspaper in the U.K. - not something the last iMac received and certainly unlikely to happen for Wintel boxes. Only my bank balance stopped me ordering one on the spot...
