updated 06:40 pm EST, Tue January 8, 2002
Extensis has released QX-Tools Pro, a "major" upgrade to its XTensions module for QuarkXPress 4/5. The new version adds QX-Import for importing Microsoft Excel or PowerPoint documents (as vector EPS files); QX-Shortcuts for managing shortcuts; and QX-Collect&Send for collecting fonts and images for prepress delivery. The English version is due in March 2002 for $200. French, German and Japanese language versions will be available in the second quarter of 2002.

Quark to die soon ?
Good thing for Quark Extensis releases these XTensions. But XPress should have these features built-in and not as some third-party XTensions. If Quark doesn't come up with a much better product, I fear XPress will soon be out. I've seen a demo of InDesign 2 which has some outstanding features. I have the XPress 5 beta. I no longer see a reason why InDesign would not gain market shares. Beware Quark. It's not because you once had a great product it cannot die. Remember SyQuest. Once probably the best product of its kind, they went bankrupt years later. If Quark does not seriously improve XPress, they'll be out of business before they realize it.
