Jobs: No merging Macs with TVs

A Reuters interview with Steve Jobs talks about Apple's future, noting that Apple may still have a few surpises, the differences between the new "revolutionary" design of the iMac as compared with the short-lived Cube, and the convergence of computers and television.

    Digital Hub?

Love the Mac, but what Sony's doing right now with their new Vaio MX series of desktops just looks a heck of a lot more like a "digital hub" than my G4 that there is literally zero options for next-generation TiVO-like time-shifting as in the Radeon All-In-Wonder, WinTV PVR, or AverTV Studio cards. Regardless of whether or not SJ thinks the computer is going to replace the TV, it's clear that with the options now available in digital cable, HDTV, etc the "analog TVs and digital PCs don't mix" argument is fading fast. And more importantly that storage and editing of dynamic multimedia on the PC (whether it's driven into homes by a cable box or a cable modem) is only just starting to explode as a massive new consumer market - a market virtually screaming for best-of-class video/audio/photo-editting apps like Apple's own iApps.

    Think different Steve.

    Even Jobs can be wrong

Wasn't it just a year or two ago when Steve Jobs
dismissed convergence, saying that TV is for turning
off the mind but the Internet/Mac is for turning
    on the mind?

It will be interesting to see whether the new
iMac or the Moxie will be the digital hub of the
future. FYI, the Moxie was announced at CES today -
    it's "WebTV done right".

    future design

I would have loved it if the Imac came with a cordless optical mouse with built in recharable batteries that would charge via firewire like the Ipod. And also a wireless keyboard that is recharable via the firewire port. I just LOVE my MS wireless, optical mouse, no cords, just pop in recharable batteries every 2 weeks on the mouse, the keyboard lasts a couple of months between charges. Perhaps in a couple of years Apple will come out with it. . .

    Wouldn't be the 1st time

If convergence appeared clearer, it wouldn't take much time to fullfill the need. A couple of years ago, Macs came with DVD players and no CD-RW drives. Apple acknowledged they totally missed the rising trend and later released new models with CD-RW drives. Of course, it's always best if you can feel what the next demand will be.

Maybe if they, on mobile computers, made the AirPort pick up TV broadcasting signals it could serve some use. I'd rather watch TV on a TV.

Instead of trying to glom "Tivo-like" features into your computer, why not just get a Tivo?

    MacTV

Apple made a MacTV, as well as TV tuner cards, long long ago. (The Performa 638CD included a TV tuner, for example.)

    wrong?

off the mind but the Internet/Mac is for turning

That was no mistake, that is exactly what is happening. Even a relatively passive activity like surfing the web isn't happening; or do you see a lot of webTv gizmos around?

You just need to realize that you sit less than a meter away from your PC, and over 3 meters away from your TV.

Then why not put your photos in a photo album. . . why not take pictures and develop them at the drugstore... Why not watch DVD movies on a tv, not on a computer. . .Why not type your letters on a typewriter. . .

Where's iMovie for TiVO? Where's the 2nd, 3rd, 4th hard drive option for TiVO? Where's the ability to burn/archive directly back to a custom DVD from TiVO?

You just need to realize that you sit less than a meter away from your PC, and over 3 meters away from you

Exactly the reason every one of the PVR cards on the market today support dual displays - one for your editing/capture/controls on your PC, one for viewing on your TV.

It's not about PCs *replacing* a TV, but providing added value (as SJ has said so many times) to a limited functionality device.
