A MacNN reader writes: "In reseller news, Mac Mall was so anxious to debut the new iMacs on their site that they copied the pages and images from the Mac Zone web site. As it turns out, with a little clever editing, Mac Mall would prefer that you shop with Zones (www.zones.com) and they've even been so kind as to display the Mac Zone phone number." [Website has since been fixed.]

Mac Mall has since fixed their screwup- but if you looked at the properties of the image, they were being pulled from a server at zones.com. Clearly, a lazy web master linked to images from a competitor instead of getting images for themselves (or, for heavens sake, just dowloading the stolen image to their own servers). Some sharp person at zones.com figured this out and replaced the images with the ones seen.

Someone at Macmall should be fired and someone at zones.com should get a big fat bonus.

Look at the source

If you do a ctl-click on the image (and open in a new window) you will notice that the images are actually maczones... which means that the macmall people are pointing directly to maczone's cached images (looks like zones is using an akamai setup). It isn't too hard to hack your own images... esp if your competitor is pointing directly to them. all they would have to do is check the server logs and see that there were a lot of foreign referrals to those images coming from macmall's domain. very funny, nonetheless.

it looks like they have corrected the oversight now...

they have cleared the images, i hit refresh and it loaded the new ones and h*** yes i took a snapshot cuz thats the funniest damn thing ive ever seen.

I guess it's nice to know I'm not the only one who got screwed by MacMall. When I bought my iMac two years ago, first of all the rep on the phone lied to me (about shipping and how long a certain promotion would last) to make sure he got the sale (commission, you know). Before I knew it, I could no longer afford my order, so I haggled the price down. But then his manager said he couldn't do that (I think he threw in a free Zip drive or something), so they canceled the order.

This time, I just used their web site to place my order. When I was done, it gave me a receipt page (which I printed out). When I checked my order status a few hours later, they had raised the price by $118. So once again, I could not afford the order. I tried to call back and talk to a manager, but he "was not at his desk", so I asked the rep to cancel my order and let him know I was no in the least bit pleased. His response? "You won't find a deal like this anywhere else." My response? "Actually, ClubMac has already offered me a better price, but thanks anyway." My response probably should've been "Good God, I sure HOPE I don't find a deal like this anywhere else!"

I even tried writing an e-mail to their Customer Service address, but it was returned as undeliverable by the mailer-daemon. I filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau, but they claimed it was "out of the scope of [their] organization". Umm... a company quotes me a price and then charges me more? That's outside the scope of the BBB?!? Apparently the Consumer Protection Agency is who I was supposed to contact, but by the time I was told this, it was almost a year later and I didn't care anymore; I had my iMac and will never buy anything from MacMall again. When I get their catalogs in the mail, they go straight to the trash can.

Me too. My complaint filed with the BBB didn't do much good, just kept being shuttled around to different offices. I feel pretty good about boycotting them, though. My sales volume is probably insignificant, but I convinced my employer and several other companies to do the same. Vote with your wallets!
