ATI yesterday posted a ATI Retail Update for Mac OS 9.x, which requires QuickTime 5, OpenGL 1.2.2, and Mac OS 9.2.1. The company recommends reading the release notes completely before installation.

    What's the point?

So now all new Macs are going to come with OS X as the default booting OS, and OS X is just about to the point where it has most of the core native apps ready.

Perfect time for ATI to release this update. Dopes. And yet I have a practically-new XClaim VR 128 card that I'll have to chuck when I get my new G4 or G5 because they refuse to provide OS X support for it or any of the other cards released around that time.

While I'm ranting about crappy support, let me add that Best Data also bites-- their USB modem drivers broke after the upgrade from OS 9.0.4 to OS 9.1, and they announced no plans to fix them for the new OS... rendering my then less than 6 month-old modem useless.

Half-assed Mac support is worse than none at all.

    Release Notes Typo

    Don’t they mean January 2002?

Well, I say if ain’t broke, don’t fix it. I have two monitors, one working from a 128Rage and one with RADEON. Everything was fine. Then I found one of the drivers had been updated a tenth of a version. So I installed the update and h*** broke loose. A wasted day trying to restore order. So proceed with caution, my friends.

But of course, I'll download it anyway.

    ATI January 2002 update

I've got a low end 400 Mhz PCI Graphics G4 with the Radeon Mac Edition and this new update works strangely with my monitor, a Gateway VX900. I've got all the system requirements ATI demands but when the computer boots up there's a point where the screen goes blank for about a minute or more and I mean a whole minute or more, it just doesn't seem like a minute. It's back to 1.1.1.
