Kurt Weinschenker writes about news he received from BBC: "the BBC World QT stream is still available . They apparently blame Apple for pulling it from QT TV. [They] also advises there 'has never been a QuickTime stream of BBC News 24' which is aimed at the british domestic market."

    viewing under OS X

I am using Mac OS X 10.1.2 and IE Exploerer 5.1. I cannot view pages with embedded quicktime; is
there away to fix this? I copied the Quicktime plugin into IE's plugin folder and it still doesn't work.

I find it amazing (and sad) that the web viewier that ships with OS X doesn't "just work" with Quicktime.

    BBC World

it looks like steve has his panties in a wad again. the bbc stream is in QT 4 and presents a screen saying that the "channel selection has changed. To see the latest choices update your software now." i get the same message using a QT4 machine or a QT 5 machine using OS 9. using QT TV or going to bbcworld.com produces the same message. pretty crazy! how can the plug-in be hijacked to give this message through the bbc page?

seems to me stevie wants bbc to use QT 5. granted it is a better product but forcing a client to upgrade sounds alot like a microshaft tactic.

    The BBC

Will probably not stream it's domestic channels since they are funded by the license fee which only comes from the domestic audience.
BBC World is funded part by advertising and other means so anyone can view it.

    The link doesn't work

The link provided doesn't work on Mac OS X and provides the same message as it does if you still have a favorites link to the old stream.

As for the suggestion that the BBC aren't upgrading to QuickTime 5, given that there are no inherent QuickTime related server costs, I really can't see how the cost can be a factor at all. We're probably talking about a maximum of £1000 for a one off upgrade of the Sorenson codec's and on-the-fly compression stuff, maybe less. I would have thought the publicity to Apple was well worth them giving it to the BBC for free.

    The BBC just has to

provide their own link to the (QT) stream since the current url goes back to Apple. That should take their web person all of about 60 seconds to accomplish.

This is not the fault of your QT PlugIn. This is a BBC issue.

In a September post to the QT Talk List, a writer said this about the QT TV BBC stream, "I also noticed that the BBC World feed has been quite unstable. My understanding, is that the QuickTime feed is not handled by the BBC or BBC World (which are two separate entities), but instead by an American New York based streaming company who pickup the satellite feed."

I've also read (don't recall where right now) that the person in charge of streaming BBC content use to work for 'Real', which goes a long way in explaining why audio/video/streaming requires the 'Real' player. I can't think of many reasons why a news organization with the resources/stature of BBC can't stream in multiple formats.

    One more thought

is that the BBC may be waiting for the (ISO-compliant) MPEG-4 file format to make its way into the new players. As I understand it, a MPEG-4 stream can be viewed in 'your player', be it Real, QT, or WMP (should MS support the standard).

Apple's new version of QuickTime - which supports MPEG-4 - is being tested by selected developers right now.

    It was all a lie

Well, 11 months on, we all know the BBC was lying through their crooked, rotting British teeth about the reasons for the QT stream disappearing. They yanked it in order to *charge* for it through RealOne. And not just regular, American RealOne, but the special *British* version only, for which you will pay $15/mo ABOVE AND BEYOND the $10/mo you pay for the US version of RealOne.

And yes, of course the Windows Media stream is also long long gone.
