iPod education pricing reduced by $20

Jared Morse notes that Apple's educational pricing for the iPod has been lowered by $20 to $350. Glenn Parker followed-up on the note:

"Unfortunately it is still $369. For a while the banner ad at the top of the education pricing said $349, but if you clicked on that banner, or put the iPod in your shopping cart you were still going to be charged the original price. Apple realized the error and has changed the banner by totally removing the price from it. It would appear that at one time they were going to lower the price for students/teachers, but changed their minds and forgot to change the ad back." [updated]

    A mistake

The pricing change must have been a mistake. I saw earlier today that it had been lowered to $249, as reported here, and now it has been raised back up again to $269. iWonder Why?

    Education pricing?

Why do education customers get a discount on something that has nothing to do with education? Stupid.

It's actually a pretty ideal educational tool, especially for college students (I work for a major public university on the west coast)--it allows them to have their MP3s plus all their data in one compact, easy to carry, easy to use device. With an iPod, they can walk into one of our labs listening to music, plug it into a Mac, immediately have access to all their papers/eudora mailboxes, and recharge their iPod while they're working--very convenient....

    why do students..

get discounts for movies? and, um, at other places too... yes, it's because they are spending a lot of their available income on their education and don't quite have the disposable income to pay full price for stuff they want for THEM. It's a nice gesture on the part of all companies who offer a student discount.

now if they offered a discount on BEER and BUFFALO WINGS?.... then i'd be annoyed.

    economic incentive

It has less to do with it being a nice gesture and more to do with opening up new markets. By offering a slightly discounted price to education types they are able to dramatically increase sales by selling to everyone who is willing to pay that price or above. Most of those education customers wouldn't buy it at the full price but at the slight discount they are more apt to buy it. It is a similar principle to the way movie theaters price discriminate to encourage more students (who have plenty of time but less money than most) to come spend what little money they have at the theater rather than on pizza, beer, or buffalo wings. ;)

Also, for college students in particular, this is the time to capture customer loyalty. This is the age not only of developing into adults, but of developing into material-oriented, brand-loyal American Consumers. Buy, buy, buy! You're not American unless you buy s***!

Why do we give discounts to senior citizens on things that have nothing to do with being old? :-)

    Students rock

We (college students) get discounts on all kinds of things that we don't need... for instance, we get large discounts on almost all magazines, including - get this - Playboy!

The reason is simple: we're poor, but willing to spend all the money we have if given a good opportunity.

    We're kinda stupid that way.
