Connectix has released VirtualPC 5.01, an update to its emulation software that began shipping last month. A technical update answers the Why VirtualPC 5 is slower on OS X than on OS 9?: "It is a fact that Virtual PC will never be as fast on Mac OS X as it is on Mac OS 9 (on the same underlying Mac hardware).... Connectix’s internal performance testing indicates that the quantitative difference between Virtual PC 5 on Mac OS 9 and Mac OS X is typically in the 20-35% range."

    Speed issues.

    It's obvious that any next generation of OS that gets so much larger would be slower. Why folks complain that VPC5 is slower then 4 is beyond me -- VPC5 versus VPC4 on Mac OS 9 are about the same, aren't they?

    I want to see how other emulators compare, though, between 9 and X. MAME? MESS? Anything else?

    Architecture

    It should be fairly clear that OS X will run applications like VPC more slowly, but that is because of fundamental changes in memory management and CPU delegation in a UNIX-based operating system.

    The same reason you can happily run 10-20 applications smoothly in OS X is the same reason that no one particular application will run as quickly.

    Protected, pre-emptive memory tasking means that one stray application cannot overtake the machine; on the flipside, one application like VPC will also not be able to have full control. It's a blessing and a curse, but on faster machines, it's less of a hindrance.

    Low end machines...

    With a low end iMac now a 700Mhz G4, I guess only the "slow G3 iBooks" would have to worrk about it. I wonder how well VPC5 runs on a faster Mac compared to a slower Mac and VPC4?

    don't bother

    VPC5 ran so slowly under OS X on my Dual G4/800 that Windows XP took 2 hours to install! It froze during the first install after it had completed 50% of the installation, as well. Even under OS 9.2.2, it was slower than version 4. Connectix's excuses are garbage. If need be, re-write the thing for OS X. People would pay for it, but they won't pay for something as slow as it currently is. I took mine back.

    also...

    the fact that they still don't support even the most basic of *today's* video cards added to my disgust with the app. I don't plan on gaming with it, but I *would* like to run WinXP in a full 1024x768 environment with more than 256 colors! This whole "4mb Trio video card" emulation is ridiculous.

    RE: also

    Admiral - 4MB vram is enough to run 1024x768 in 32-bit (42-bit, if you want to be exact) mode, so if you're stuck in 256 that's a bad Windows XP installation, not Virtual PC or inadequate video memory. Try setting the Virtual PC preferences to use 4 MB of video RAM instead of 1.

    4MB= 4*1024*1024*8 bits vs memory required for 32-bit SVGA mode = 32bits*1024width*768height.

    Your mileage may vary...

    Just finished doing a clean install of VPC 5.0 with
    Win2000. And the update to VPC 5.0.1 was flawless in Mac OSX 10.1.2. The entire process was VASTLY improved over v.3 or v.4, and even though I feel vaguely unclean with this on my Ti PowerBook/400, I highly recommend it. Plus, kudos are in order for the author of the documentation--which was truly horrible in prior versions. (BTW, according to my wristwatch, the initial install took 11 minutes including the Win2000 install.)
