Several MacNN readers note that the radio station KCRW is holding a contest for which the grand prize is "a fancy new Apple Computer to be announced January 7th," as well as an iPod. Users who subscribe to the station between now and February 1, 2002 are automatically entered.

    New Computer

That confirms it, Apple is introducing a new computer. Most likely an LCD iMac and hopefully upgraded processor speeds across the line.

    good idea?

I don't feel comfortable trying to win it if i live accross the country. I'd just be taking the prize, never listening to the station

    New Computer

That doesn't "prove" that there will be a new MODEL of computer, ie: Pismo - TiBook or Clamshell iBook - Iceblock iBook. Any alteration to the internal specs technically makes the model new. The 700 MHz iMac Special Edition can be considered new versus the old 600 MHz special edition that preceded it.

Besides, I really doubt Apple would share it's annoucement plans with a radio station, of all sources. More likely than anything is that the station simply knows that SOMETHING new will be introduced, even if they are just speed bumps, and that the Apple computer you get if you win will be new as of that keynote speech.

Doesn't mean I don't think new models of hardware will be introduced. I certainly do believe we'll see SOME major upgrade to the desktop line. I just don't think a radio station is privvy to that information.

KCRW offers more than just radio to Santa Monica. They provide live RealPlayer streams of their broadcasts and high quality archives of live performances by artists on their "Sounds Eclectic" program. Check it out at http://www.kcrw.com/music/cd.html

    no purchase necessary?

I didn't think it was legal to make someone pay to enter a contest. I could not find any way to enter the contest without sending them some money. Did I miss something?

Oops, I found it (not on the subscription page, of course). You have to mail them a postcard.

    iWalk or G5

It could be either the iWalk or a new G5. I never believed the iWalk stuff and I was a bit skeptical about the G5 but now that macosrumors is assuring us that we should expect neither, I'm sure we'll see both. Because mosr can never be right.
