Apple has released DVD Studio Pro 1.2, an update to its DVD authoring software that adds support for external FireWire drives that use the Panasonic combination DVD-RAM/DVD-R mechanism, such as the LaCie DVD-RAM/R drive. It also improves the output of DLT tapes that are sent for replication, particularly those that use copy protection technologies, such as Macrovision and CSS.

    Macrovision?

I hope it "improves" Macrovision and CSS by eliminating them!

    Panasonic?

I think it should be Pioneer DVD-RAM/R mechanism. Shouldn't it?

No, it shouldn't. The Pioneer mechanism Apple uses is DVD-R/DVD-RW. Panasonic also has their own DVD-R mechanism. In addition to DVD-R, it also burns to DVD-RAM, but not DVD-RW. It's been out for a while. I think the QPS DVD burner uses this mechanism as well.

Not likely, considering only those who have Superdrives built into their G4s should have iDVD in the first place. I think even to get/use the iDVD 2 upgrade from Apple's online store you need to have iDVD 1, which only came bundled with those machines that have Superdrives built in. Now if they were to make iDVD available for third-parties to bundle with their DVD-R drives, then external support would be necessary, but from what I've heard, Apple's not interested in doing that.

    iDVD SHOULD have ext. sup

I think that iDVD is an incredible piece of software and it should support external FW drives...Heck, I'd have no problem paying for it...even $100...but not $1,000 like DVD SP.

Apple should even sell external superdrives in their stores, heck they sell DVD-RAM drives.

Oh, and iDVD 2 can be installed without having 1.0 (I've done it), but it only recognizes IDE drives.

    iDVD

They made iMovie a seperate product (iMovie 2, anyway) so it seems plausable we'd see the same thing for iDVD. A few more days, gang.

    re: iDVD and external

Apple's been using iDVD as a way to get people to buy PowerMacs. Instead, they should use it as a way to buy *Macs.

However this decision was probably a result of their business analysts declaring that iDVD is more likely to get current Mac users to upgrade to PowerMacs (and iDVD) than it is to get PC users to convert to Macs.

Hopefully this will be moot on Monday when Apple releases an iMac line with SuperDrives as available options... :-)
