Casady & Greene has released Conflict Catcher 9, an update to its $80 startup management application which claims to offer "faster, easier and simpler Conflict testing" as well as logging of intermittant problems, enhanced USB/FireWire reporting, more extension link groups, and other enhancements. It also supports management of Classic under OS X. Upgrades are $30 and include a full version of InfoGenie 2. [site not responding]

    Obsolete?

Back in the olden days, when extensions were reaching deep into the guts of Mac OS 6, 7, 8 and stepping all over each others' toes, utilities like Conflict Causer (oops, Catcher) were vital. These days, though, unless you're installing some shareware application released back in '96, they really aren't needed.

Apple has gotten the Classic Mac OS whittled and polished down to a great system (albeit fundamentally obsolete), and I suspect few people will be needing this update (relative to those who used CC8).

    X has no extensions?

Seems to me that CC lets me disable and prevent from loading lots of junk like AOL IM. Or enable/disable sets, and any folder I want. As well as spot a corrupt system file. And X? Lots of extensions and startup items in there too. Looks like a step in the right direction - and you can slim down that folder, helpful if you don't want two system folders.

    Why site not responding

iwish that when vendors posted or released updates that they would also upgrade their server or outsource. This is a joke. Or taking a week to get through to dl Palm Desktop.

    Still Useful

Nothing beats the Clean System Install Merge function when updating/installing a new OS. And it makes it so easy to re-organize the load order of extensions. I'm glad to see it supported.
