Nortel Networks has posted a new public beta of its Internet Call Waiting client for Macs. The software notifies users when a phone call comes in while online, allowing you to answer the call, route the call to another phone, have the software play back a message for the caller, or have the caller leave a message that is then sent to your email account as an audio file.

    1-Way Cable Modem

I have a 1-Way cable modem setup, which basically means that I use the cable line downstream but I still need an analog modem upstream. Unfortunately, the alpha and beta version of this product doesn't will not even register me as a user. I get a generally useless "Communications Error" message when I attempt to register on a consistent basis. I have no idea if this is because of a problem in the software, or because it is not compatible with my cable/analog modem setup.

    Won't register

You're not the only one. I couldn't get the thing to register me on a standard dial-up account. Maybe their beta isn't really quite beta...

    Ditto

I downloaded a beta earlier this week which would not register. Maybe this is a new version which worked out the bug...

    doesn't work for me

I downloaded the 'beta' for this software a few weeks
ago. I could not, for the life of me, get this program to
work. I'll wait for the final version, thanks.

    Works great for me...

I've been running it since the alpha version came out. Some early versions would crash every so often, but these were 'soft' crashes and didn't s**** up anything else that was running. The last version I d/l'd (3.1beta) has been working great so far. I will say they have continually improved the product and are very receptive to suggestions...such as forwarding the call to another phone.

    This thing is worthless

I downloaded this SW and installed it for my BW G3.

First of all, the install didn't finish properly, and wouldn't let me quit it. I did a Force Quit, and that made everything happy. So I restarted. Everything fine, or so I thought. My modem connection, which is run by a machine in my garage, was even happy.

Just after the restart, and assuming that this software was well-behaved, my wife and I went Christmas shopping. I thought that this was simply Call Waiting software, and would not be a problem. Boy, was I wrong.

We came home to find out that the modem had been connected for 7 hours and 22 minutes. I was pissed! ( I have my setup configured to close the connection for the whole house after 20 minutes of inactivity.)

Nortel says that they have just a few bugs to work out at this point. I think that a "few" is a drastic understatement. The readme file neglects to mention that their software will negotiate a phone connection automatically, and keep it active indefinitely.

It's a damn good thing that I am not charged for Internet access on a time-basis. Otherwise, I would claim those fees to hire a lawyer to sue Nortel for time and money for being the dupe of testing their sloppy software.

Releasing beta software as a public beta without a warranty is understandable. Releasing alpha software as beta is inexcusible.

If Nortel wants to come after me for libel or slander, tell them to come on. My lawyer is bigger and badder. Besides, he has the truth on his side.

    Nortel what a waste

This isn't about their call waiting. It is about their switches. They sent 25 swtiches Baystack 350's to my school with 1.x software. It should be 3.1. The switches won't work, can get to network printers or send files over the network. Loging in to a Multiuser IMac takes forever. These Imacs are not connected to a server. Have asked Nortel to come and fix. Been told it will cost several hundred dollars.

You'd sue for a few dollars of connect fees because beta software didn't work? If you value your time so highly, why do you muck about with pre-release software?

    Anti-Nortel???

This is a Mac site dedicated to Mac software. This is not about someone's axe being grinded against Nortel.

One should be so grateful that a huge multinational corporation is spending time on the Mac market...period! I have not seen anything from Lucent or Cisco or JDS etc etc.

So, we had better be appreciative of the fact that (1) this is completely beta (2) tech is VERY responsive and I can personally confirm this (3) this is potential Mac software with potential commercial viability (4) no, I don't work for Nortel but have driven by their Brampton, ON head office on many occasions and think they're a GREAT company.

C'mon guys - quit bitching and just hash out the problems. The manager of this site should inform the Nortel tech team of this BUILDING thread so that they can monitor people testing it - or better yet - build a forum for the software for MacNN beta-testers to discuss - this kind of COLLABORATIVE effort on the part of MacNN, its user and Nortel could go a long way in helping people get more software for their sacred Mac cow that is severely lacking in a lot of software areas.
