TechTV to cover MWSF keynote

updated 08:55 am EST, Thu January 3, 2002

", 0, 0);

Several MacNN readers note that Steve Jobs' Expo keynote will be covered on TechTV Cable Channel (as well as Webcast and Satellicast, as noted yesterday): "TechTV WILL be covering the January 7, 2001 MacWorld Expo keynote and any new products....Special Thanks to those of you who wrote asking about the keynote being carried. It was what was needed to push the issue and get a decision to send Brett [Larson]." [updated] A MacNN reader brought to our attention that TechTV will cover the keynote, and not necessarily broadcast it live.

    Hope it's better ...

If it's the same coverage as last time, complete with self-absorbed commentary that was not only uninformed, but just kept droning on and on, I'll either take my chances with the streaming video or read about it, thanks!

    I strongly agree...

Last time I was tempted to drive to techtv studios just to smack Jim Chowderhead. If anyone is listening can we PLEASE get Leo Laporte in early that day?

    My letter to TechTV

We should all write to TechTV and ask them to not be dinks this time around when they show the keynote. I wrote this, just thought I'd share.

Well, first off I'd like to thank you for deciding to broadcast Steve Jobs' keynote live on your channel. But, after the last TechTV broadcast, I am a bit hesitant. Your commentators knew nothing about Macs, were extremely negative, and their comments and criticizms could have been kept to themselves. They warned that any demonstration can be skewed to perform a certain way, interrupting Steve Jobs' presentation many times just to throw out a negative comment, not even realizing that most of the only people watching the keynote were Mac fans who didn't like and didn't appreciate being patronized by some commentator that thought they knew everything. Basically, we're Mac fans watching a Mac show, we sure don't need someone interrupting said show just to throw out disparaging comments. Hopefully, this showing will be much MUCH better then the last.

    Thank you.

I couldn't agree more. Last time 'round I was happy to be able to see it on my TV, but wasn't too happy about the commentators and constant cut-aways.

I'll keep my iBook nearby for the stream, just in case.

    Re. Louderback / Larson

    Michael--

You're correct, and in fact Jim Louderback (commentator during the MWNY broadcast last summer) was actually getting it WRONG while he talked over the keynote--he kept yakking about how "we don't know how much RAM these machines have" etc. (during the Photoshop bakeoff) when, if he would have shut up for a minute, he would have heard Jobs clearly state (twice) that both systems had the same hard drive, same RAM, and same graphics card.

The MWNY/Louderback incident, btw, led to an interesting side "incident" as well, as documented here:

Brett Larson is TechTV's in-house "Mac guy" as I understand it, and will hopefully have better judgement about what sort of color commentary to make (or, better yet, none at all...just let us watch the show!)

    Brett Larson ...

---is definitely a Mac guy. He used to write a column for Macworld, and may still be a contributor. I wouldn't worry about him being a basher.

Yes, absolutely, Brett would be an excellent choice, and would probably be as prone to the RDF as the rest of us. I just can't see techtv letting the keynote speak for itself.

    Should be better...

Per a similar story on MacCentral, the TechTV person was quoted as saying that this years coverage will be more positive.
