Radeon PCI on the horizon

updated 09:30 am EST, Fri December 1, 2000

MacNN sources confirm that ATI has ceased distribution of its aftermarket Rage 128-based graphics cards for Macs, signaling the near imminent release of the company's PCI Radeon card, expected to arrive this month. Rage 128 cards can still be found in limited quantities in the channel.

    ATI Radieon PCI

it's about %^&*() time..... I bought a Apple Studio Display in the beginning of October, (The older version that was discontinued at MACWORLD NY) only to find out I needed a DVI connector... the only card was the Rage Pro in the AGp version, and I need a PCI version... So I waited for the Radieon.... and waited... Maybe I will finally be able use my flat screen by Chriatmas if I have my Radieon pci for May Yikes G4....

ATI says it will be later

The ATI people emailed me yesterday saying that the expected ship date for the new Radeon PCI card for mac will not be until the end of december. I was hoping to pick one up before christmas. My only choice is to wait or go with the 3Dfx crew whose card doesn't do DVD.

    Ongoing Radeon Delays

ACP Radeon Cards are near inposible to get hold of any way. I ordered mine at the begining of November and thie ship date has been put back twice. this is from a Major UK Mail order house. Yet I can walk into the local PC parts store an pick up the PC card off the shelf.

    ATI deserves a b'otchsla

This is incredibly frustrating! ATI is finally proving they can produce something other than a Mickey Mouse videocard, something they're gonna make a boatload of money on, and some some reason people with pre-AGP systems- in other words, the people most likely to need a video upgrade- are being forced to wait months. They're going to miss Christmas- are they NUTS? I know there're a lot of technical aspects to producing hardware I know nothing about, but since ATI is the only real option for Mac users, it would be nice if they didn't treat us as the sort of second-class citizens that most other manufacturers do.

To quote Grandpa, "It's cold, and there are wolves chasing me."

    Too bad

When is everyone going to realize that ATI really isn't committed to the Mac platform? ATI has always sucked in terms of support for the Mac. They have been the OEM leader for Apple for the past few years and all Apple products get is a mediocre product with weak software support.

If you don't believe me just take a look at how long Radeon has been readily available for PCs. And then take a look at the feature set there too.

Then look at 3dfx, who is struggling a bit now and often find it difficult to win a solid place in the Mac arena, and they have their act together. Only being around officially for the platform for a few months.

I'm not saying that 3dfx is the best but I am saying that ATI is the worst. I give 3dfx a lot of respect for much appreciated effort. Which is why I have their product in my machine instead of ATI's. ;)

    Boycott ATI

Check out ATI's web site... The Radeon for PC comes with hardware MPEG2 encoding, so you can build all sort of exciting video applications (homebrew Tivo, for instance).
The Mac version lacks this feature, costs more, and is late.
Considering all the money ATI has been milking out of Apple these past few years, you'd think they'd be a little more grateful.
I think it's high time Apple dumps their sorry Canadian arses and gets an OEM who can deliver good products on time and cares about their customers.
As far as I'm concerned it will be a cold day in h*** when I spend any of my $$$ on one of their crappy products.

    Video card options

I believe Apple would do well to select a different video card OEM company. Voodoo, Fromac, or just about anyone else could easily replace ATI's antiquated Mac products that play second fiddle to the Wintel platform. Now I can understand why Steve Jobs yanked the ATI Radeon from the Cube at the last minute just before it was introduced. ATI could not meet the demand for the product, and its drivers were not the best they could offer even though Apple has supported ATI as an OEM product through thick or thin.

Like they say, "Take ATI for example...PLEASE!!!!"

    To the DVI guy..

Dude, you have a Yikes G4? You should have purchased a Voodoo 4 or Voodoo 5 for the Mac - they both have DVI on them. 3dfx really HAS been doing a great job with their Mac stuff.. you can update drivers from right in the 3dfx Mac Tools control panel now. That's way cool! ATI has just been known for bumbling around with their "Universal Driver" package.. don't forget the fact their PC cards have loads and loads of features that their Mac versions have never had. Where's our All-In-Wonder Radeon for the Macintosh? Just isn't there.. :(
Bah, the h*** with ATI. 3dfx cards in all my Macs, and I'm a very happy customer. Now if Apple would only offer the 3dfx cards as an OEM option.. (hey, nobody can deny that at least having a choice would be a cool thing to see at the Apple Store...)
