QuickTime 5.0 Preview 2 privately seeded

updated 09:45 am EST, Fri December 1, 2000

Several readers note that Apple has seeded QuickTime 5 Preview 2 to developers. The software, available to registered developers from the Apple Developer Connection, includes the first Windows preview of QuickTime 5.0. While changes from Preview 1 are not explicit noted, one reader states that the Aqua-look has been removed from the OS 9 version of QuickTime. It's unclear whether Apple will make the new preview available to consumers, although the company has promised that a Windows preview will be ready early next year.

    Getting in...

Netscape gave me a lot of trouble, but IE seems to have better luck. I haven't tried iCab or Mozilla yet.

    Info on Changes

The OS 9 Player still uses the same interface, but the Aqua close/minimize/maximize controls are gone. In thier place, FINALLY is the standard OS 9 controls (athough in the brushed metal look) that allow you to windowshade the player. Finally, Apple listens regarding this much requested feature. No word on MPEG 2 support though :-(

    MPEG2 and RamDoubler

The documentation lists the new features of QuickTime 5, but it mentions nothing about MPEG 2 support, perhaps it won't make it into the final release..

The new beta also isn't compatible with RamDoubler, it automatically disables it when booting up.

    SoundFonts & DLS support?

The downloadable sounds feature is advertised as a feature of QT5 on the Apple site, but was, as far as I could tell, missing from Preview release 1. Is it in the new version?
