TheStreet.com has posted a piece dubbed "Sweet Exec Deals Sour Apple's Image" in which columnist Glenn Curtis criticizes Apple's executive compensation. Curtis says he's "not always convinced that the company has the common shareholder's best interest at heart," pointing out a $500,000 signing bonus for Timothy Cook, Senior Vice President, Worldwide Sales Service and support, and hefty stock option awards.

Let's see...is today the day I start giving a f*#k about anything anyone at TheStreet.com has to say? Nope. Doesn't look like it.

God, that site is a scam. Worthless.

I think they should double the amount of salaries and bonus and stock options that they are giving their executives. To h*** with the shareholders, let them eat cake...

    Empty stockings.

The sound you hear are of countless wallstreeters digging into their stockings and finding copperheads and sometimes coal as bonuses.

    Jealousy reigns. Year-long stupidity repaid.

somebody didn't get their annual raise. The article was incredibly short on facts. The question is not who much are these people getting, but are these people worth what they're getting. I dunno-- give me something to work with, don't just tattle on big brother...

    Worth every dollar...

Didn't Apple do better than just about any other computer mfg. in 2001? These people deserve it.

Wonder how much the execs at HP and Compaq are getting this year for sending those two companies into a sucking black hole...

    They deserve NOTHING.

The purpose of such big bonuses is either to reward the execs for a job well done (and this was a very ho-hum year; the targets were NOT met), or to prevent exec attrition, rather unlikely to happen in this market.
In other words, these bonuses are completely uncalled for, and as a shareholder I'm totally pissed off.

The execs did a good job, compared to other companies. Based on how everything is going businesswise, they made the best decisions that could have been made considering the economic slump that we are in now. Apple has done well overall, for the whole year. They couldn't have hardly done any better. They worked hard, and they deserve to be compensated. Next year should be a year that the economy is well again, and apple WILL really shine. Giving bonuses now during this period will help to keep the executives when the times are better, it should give them pause to jump ship just because they could make more somewhere else. Bonuses build loyalty to the company, in addition to giving the executives the feeling that they truly are appreciated.

    Almighty dollar!

I'm with a previous poster, Apple should give it's execs upwards of 5 trillion dollars for the hard work they do. A piece. Give them all islands as well.

    Interesting Article

but I wonder why the author made no mention of Paul Allen's and Bill Gates' combined (record) dumping of over $12billion in Microsoft (MSFT) stock since the Antitrust Trial started in 1998, even while Microsoft's two top-ranked executives collected more in salary than the top 5 brass at Apple.

    Just a thought.

Microsoft's executives' pillaging of shareholder value for their own gluttonous needs while the company they lead is labeled a monopolistic corporate felon is enough to make any Enron executive blush with embarassment.

Apple has fared well over the last year. The iBook alone has been a smash hit. The iPod is a nice piece of work. Profits were down but not too bad for the beginning of a recession. I believe that Apple's execs have done a good job under difficult circumstances and that Apple needs to keep the compensation high to attract good people.

I bet the people in charge of Windows Xtra Porous get more money for "the most secure operating system Microsoft ever released". FBI warnings not withstanding.
