NewsFactor profiles the state of Motorola, Apple's manufacturer of PowerPC processors which has announced plans to cut more than 9,400 jobs and close some facilities. Unfortunately, Motorola said its semiconductor products sector (which produces PowerPC chips) will be most affected by the layoffs, and shed about 4,000 employees.

R.I.P. Moto

We just sent this tiny little 500 pc. order to the manufacturing equipment-making arm of Moto a few weeks ago.

They have turned over so many people they didn't know how to handle this part they used to order quite regularly. The buyer called, seemingly rather miffed, and said we didn't give them the correct part.

Well we *did* but she didn't know that variation has a hole drilled in it by someone else, not us. So now they have to run down quotes on getting 500 little dinky (0.30 dia. +0.00/-0.02 tolerance) holes drilled in this carbon-loaded soft plastic (the parts smell like pencils, you know graphite)

Gotta love it! We got a ton of ancient jobs sitting on the shelf. I wonder what would happen if I sent a notice to have them pay us storage, retroactive to when they last ordered...

Can Moto Apple

If Apple is smart, they'll can Motorala and go with IBM for chip production. They should do the R & D in-house and then contract IBM for the actual fabrication. To h*** with Moto.

Apple should buy the semiconductor division of Moto when it goes up for sale in '02. Then Apple will be in charge of their own destiny. At least when they stall on CPU R&D they will have nobody to blame...

This scares me...

This is very bad for future development of the G5. Already they are testing it, we know that, and they have been doing it for a rather long period of time now. It seems to me that if apple relies on motorola as it is now with 4,000 less employies in that particular sector, that it will be very difficult for apple to maintain the kind of performace gap it has held over PC chips.

It also seemed to me that motorola has been getting less and less enthusiastic about developing processors for Apple.

So perhaps this is bad news, but it may become good news. This may give Apple the chance or motivation to completely take over the designing of the PowerPC chip. Apple would then have a virtual monopoly over everything that makes a mac a mac, which is good, and more effecient. If that were the case they could save so much time by just getting things done the way they want them done, and not haveing to negotiate everything...

Of course I probably got this all wrong, and don't know anything, but what the heh?

So bad news for those employees, especially around Christmas, and I offer them my sypathies. And my prayers go out to Apple that they might remain the David who slayed and will continue to slay the Microsoft/PC goliath.

to go ahead and move to x86. It will be utterly critical but would lower computer production costs and who knows, maybe PC users will go crazy over OSX.

Darwin on x86? Time to get this project's assets in gear.

(I'd be happy enough though if it was IBM that started making PPC chips. Wouldn't it be ironic if they did? Apple OS X with an IBM CPU running Microsoft software. Heh.)

You know steve will never go for that, he'd lose some power by doing that, and people could build their own mac from off the shelf parts, and could upgrade the cpu and mobo if they want to upgrade. They could even use cases in non-approved apple colors and style, oh my! Steve's communist regime would collapse in no time..... like the commercial 1984, which is actually apple users revolting against the monopolist hardware maker that is apple.
