Afternoon tech news: Sony's Playstation 2 edged out Microsoft's Xbox and Nintendo's GameCube, according to holiday sales figures released by an independent third-party; Hewlett-Packard was top PC notebook vendor in retail sales in October, although sales fell 9 percent in the month compared with October 2000; Japan's second-largest chipmaker, NEC, will halt chip production at its Scottish plant by April as demand for electronic devices and mobile handsets in Europe shrinks.

GC vs. PS2
I don't like the statistics thrown around in that article. It's an unfair representation of the market. There more Playstation 2s available to the consumer to purchase; with the GameCube just being launched, Nintendo could not ship them to some retail outlets fast enough. Also, they are including a week's worth of sales where the GameCube wasn't even released! Bad form. It'd be like Creative saying that the Nomad Jukebox has been far more successful than the iPod this year- of course it has shipped more units, the iPod has only been available for a couple months now. If you look at weekly figures, though, i bet the iPod is outselling the comparable Jukebox, and I'm sure the GameCube is outselling either the PS2 or the XBox.
And not that it matters all that much, but when the console makers release their numbers regarding number of units sold, each refers to the number of consoles sold to a retailer, and not retailer to consumer. That's why Nintendo reported 750,000 units sold in the first week the GameCube was available, whereas this article states only 600,000+ GameCubes were sold in the final three weeks of the study.
