Windows XP commercial compared to Apple ads

updated 01:15 pm EST, Thu December 13, 2001

NewsFactor's Robyn Weisman compares Microsoft's recent Windows XP commercials to Apple advertisements, saying "As Madonna's 'Ray of Light' pulses, a person flies through a Technicolor blue sky holding a Windows laptop, while below people edit movies and do all sorts of multimedia things. It is as if they had walked into a Mac ad by mistake."

    heheh

both apples and M$ commercials suck but at least M$ have stepped up to the mac level instead of showing how joe brown uses winblows 95 to get top dollar on sending his cows to the slaughter. that was a funny commercial come to think if you look at it in a warped way....

i like in the article when they point out business's arent moving to XP yet as they dont have enough money for more IT in this soft economy. thats just sad.

    Would be funny...

To find out that those commercials were probably edited on Final Cut Pro, kind of like the commercials Intel made a year or so ago where all the fancy 3D graphics were done on a Mac.

    Not really

Comparing the "Windows Geeks Flying" ad to anything Apple would do is actually kind of insulting.

Say what you want about Apple's ads, they're ten times better than that XP Ad. And they're a lot classier, too (recent iPod at notwithstanding).

Chiat Day makes ads that the cool people make. The Windows XP ad is the one that the guy who thought he was cool made.

It's as fundamental a difference as the difference between Jobs and Ballmer. Jobs is cool, naturally. Ballmer is a geek who wants you to think he's cool, so he trys really hard, and only succeeds at embarrassing himself.

You can't be cool by trying to copy what the cool people do. If you aren't cool, you have to accept your lack of coolness, or even poke fun at it. That's the only way Microsoft is ever going to get any real respect from consumers.

    I agree

If Apple ever makes a commercial as stupid as those XP ads, then I'll probably chuck my iMac out the nearest window.

    This article...

...has VERY little to do with comparing commercials between the two companies. I just love how the author draw the reader into an article under the guise of something interesting...in the end it turns out to be more M$ related krap. I'm seriously glad a portion of our IT group is looking into migrating to a Linux based, Window's free environ for file serving...if for no other reason than to help deplete M$'s advertising budget. XP is krap...long live Linux, Mac, and all their variants!

    Apple's ads

haven't impressed me much lately. maybe it wouldn't be a bad idea to dumb them down a bit. you know, Gateway has the talking cows, maybe Apple should have, well, talking apples. Talking, suicidal apples falling off the tree and running to the apple stores and throwing themselves on all the hardware ... going splat, and what's left is the apple logo on everything.
Yeah, it's dumb but people will remember it, that's the important thing.

    no, dear god, not cows...

...please don't ask apple to emulate that slimy gateway idiot and his talking cow. their almost as annoying as "stephen" and his "you're gettin' a DELL!" ad campaign.

i mean, i know what you're saying -- make 'em memorable. but apple's ads give us a little more credit for having brains in our heads than either gateway OR dell.

p.s. anyone notice that dell's new catchphrase is "easy as dell"? i suppose that's supposed to be a funny take off of the phrase "easy as h***," but doens't that necessarily imply that dell is somewhat synonymous with h***? what genius in the marketing department came up with THAT one?!?

    Agreed

Splatting apples would be humorous and something that would stick inside your head for awhile...its settled then, make it so #1.
