Microsoft yesterday rejected a settlement offer from the nine dissenting states in the DOJ/States antitrust case, saying that proposals "seem calculated to inflict maximum commercial harm on Microsoft" and would amount to a divestiture of its valuable Windows operating system and Office suite of business software.

    HaHa

Is this not a antitrust case is all about getting the company not do it again and punish them for doing it in the first place. One way is to "inflict maximum commercial harm on Microsoft"

Microsoft does agree to something that does not benefit them, this settlement offer will be accept by the courts as the real punishment for Microsoft.

    Ridiculous

Since when do those being punished have the right and/or ability to dictate to the authorities what , if any punishment they would be willing to accept? If one breaks tthe law, they are bound by the judges order, except for appeal. It is not for Microsoft to accept or reject a judgement imposed. The concept of them rejecting proposals is ABSURD!!

    Who would have thunk it?

Microsoft? Rejecting the anti trust proposal that would have actually done something? Noooo.

    What shocking news...

Because they're trying to have a *settlement*, where both sides mutually agree on the decision. If Microsoft doesn't settle, the judges will then tell them what to do. If they don't like it, they can appeal.

Isn't the proposed punishment exactly what MS did to others....calculated to inflict maximum commercial harm on any competitors.

So they don't like it. How do you think the competitors liked it?

    Glad to see...

...others saying the same thing I was thinking. A criminal, found guilty in a court of law, deciding their own punishment. Ludicrous. Thanks George W.

your honor, i think 35 years is too long, after all, the guy's not dead, i just put him in a coma for the rest of his life, jeez. Why don't you just go think it over in your judges chamber or whatever and come back to me with a verdict a bit more to my liking.

    Just make them Pay

They should just pay a huge fine, I don't think MS needs to know where the money goes, it definately shouldn't go straight to education, because the education market is the only market that they do not have the overwelming majority of the marketshare in. If Schools knew that the money came form MS then they may feel obligated to by MS equipment with it, this pushes out the guys like Apple who have been clawing their way into the market and fighting off MS as long as they have.

One thing I know for sure, the schools that use Macs tend to have students producing real life work and not wasted time trying to keep their computers from crashing. I've seen 4th graders doing better video editing and presentation work than High School kids, because the 4th graders are using iMacs and the High School kids are using Wintel machines.
