RealNetworks has officially announced that it will support for the MPEG-4 format, which is based on QuickTime, with upcoming versions of its RealSystem iQ and RealOne media player products. Meanwhile, a ZDNN article quotes Frank Cassanova, Apple's director of product marketing for QuickTime, as saying that a new version of QuickTime with undisclosed feature additions has been released to some beta testers.

    How does one download it?

I have visited Real.com on occassion, and have never found a download location for the free player, just the RealPlayer Plus ($19.95). Is it there, anywhere??

    what about os x?

IMHO I'd rather be using Microsoft WiMP than RealPlayer (and I think they're both terrible)... but for the occasional times when RealPlayer becomes necessary, I would like to be able to use an OSX native one rather than trying to run RealPlayer in classic. Any word on RealPlayer and OS X? Has Real even promised support for it?

    Downloading Real...

It's a multi-step convoluted process to download the free version of the Real Player. What you have to do is go to www.real.com, scroll down about half way to the small "RealOne Player - Free" logo that says "Free Download" under it. That doesn't link to the free player though - but that does link to a page with a link for "Free Player." Clicking Free Player doesn't link to a free player either - you get yet another ad for their full version. To get the free player, click on the link for "Download the Free RealOne Player Only." You then have to LOG IN to finally get to the free player.

By the time you actually get to it, you probably lost any interest in listening to whatever it was that caused you to download it in the first place.

    Everything...

...will be consolidated. All rivers lead to the same ocean. Or so we hope. What a joke that Microsoft is working on getting WMP support in DVD players. Ugh. When will it stop.

    I wonder if this means...

... that any given MPEG-4 broadcast will be viewable by either RealPlayer or QuickTime Player?

If MPEG-4 is indeed a standard, it *should* be possible to tune in with the user's choice of client, just like any brand of TV can pick up a standard NTSC broadcast...

    Yes !

MPEG-4 will be readable in any player, device. MPEG-4 support is already here... See Envivio.com a local company (Rennes, France) which brings MPEG-4 support to Quicktime and Real (Real officialy chose Envivio's products for its MPEG-4 implementation). Sorenson has made a MPEG-4 codec for Quicktime too. It seems that Sorenson Video 3 is better than MPEG-4 for the same bitrate but MPEG-4 allows many more things than just video encoding (see examples on Envivio.com)
