Handspring reportedly plans to drop the price of its Visor Edge handheld by $30 tomorrow, resulting in a retail price of $270. The company is experiencing a "lukewarm" response to the Edge, which does not natively accept Springboard expnasion modules.

    FIRST POST! BOO YEAH!!!

Why all these damned proprietary expansion formats. Can't they all just stick to compact flash?

    Misleading

"Natively" is a misleading way to describe the way the Edge accepts Springboard cards. A sleeve (included with the unit) is slipped over the Edge to allow it to use Springboards.
As for the last poster, you're absolutely right...standardized expansion is a good thing. Springboard is extremely well-designed, but bulky and will (probably/hopefully) be dropped in favor of SD.
Anyway, for those who don't know, the Edge is a very thin Palm OS handheld. Handspring has good Mac support and makes a great product.

    even though

even though PDAs have been around for a while, the expansion technology is still relatively new and standardization makes the choice easier for consumers, but isn't always the best thing. Once PDAs really take off (if that'll ever be the case, meaning PDAs may take off but in a different incarnation) the standard will be whatever consumers decide to buy. Right now, there's not that big of a market.

    Treo

Well, I would also assume that people are waiting for the Handspring Treo Communicator in January. There's more info at TreoMB.com, but basically this device could be very popular.

Handspring is very mac friendly, indeed :-)

    Amazing New Low Price! :P

Checked the Handspring site a few moments ago and it appears they cut it $50 instead of $30, for a total of $249.

    Old tech.

As beautiful as the Visor Edge's form factor is, it's really nothing more than a Palm Vx with a Springboard slot. It's still monochrome, and at its core, it still doesn't do anything more than my nearly four-year-old Palm III can do. If Handspring had brought out a Visor Edge with a colour screen six months ago, they'd be selling much better. Not many people want a premium-priced monochrome PDA these days.

What the PDA manufacturers don't seem to realize is that they need to put out compelling new products to get people to upgrade. The latest Palm OS devices just aren't that interesting. No new capabilities, really.

Handspring is probably going to slash prices on all of their organizers in the next few months, as they're exiting the organizer market and will be focusing all their efforts on the Treo and similar hybrid phone devices.
