iPod software update warning

updated 08:45 pm EST, Fri December 7, 2001

", 0, 0);

A MacNN reader warns that hitting the "cancel" button during the iPod software update process may render your iPod unusable:

"Just to let you know that I had a perfectly working ipod until I decided to run the update. No progress was being shown on the progress bar so I decided after 5 mins to press the CANCEL" ... "now stuck on the welcome screen (apple logo with Ipod Title) and the HD is running constantly" ... "I believed that is that option was available that meant that it was not dangerous."

    it might not be cancel

I was amazed at the speed of updating when I ran the updater, it took only a couple of seconds to finish.

I have a hunch that there was a problem with the update well before the five minutes passed and CANCEL was pressed.

    iPod updater: thoughts

As for me, I applied the update yesterday
evening and had no problems whatsoever.
    Everything worked beautifully!

    never, ever, ever...

...cancel a firmware update in the middle. even if it looks safe. i am surprised apple even left the option... also, make sure everything you value on a machine is backed up before firmware updates, and be prepared with your warranty, just in case.

folks - firmware stuff is some weird voodoo. don't approach it lightly; there is rarely an "undo."

    Other Disk Modes

Your best bet here is to check out the other modes for the ipod. www.ipoding.com has a lot of good information, but basically hold down prev, next and action(the center button). This will load diagnostic mode, and you can check out what's wrong, by arrowing up and down, and performing the tests. Check out ipoding.com for more info.

    reformat it!

Can ya boot it in firewire mode and reformat it? Hum...maybe not with the firmware being changed. Diag mode seem to be a winner but I'd guess that telling Apple rather than MacNN might elicit a response.

    Follow up

I am the person who posted the story. Thanks for the link to ipoding since this has help me a lot.

Problem was loosing all DATA on the ipod...i don t care about the mp3s but I wanted to get the data back. The ipod was stuck in the welcome screen so I pressed menu+play for more than 10 sec. It resets once and then shuts down. From there I entered pure firewire mode by pressing left/right/center (i think) and the ipod now shows on the desktop.
I am now copying my 2 gigs of data back to my machine and should be apble to do a full reset when done.
Forcing the ipod to go in Firewire mode did the trick. Thanks for macnn for posting the story and thanks for the readers to suggest ipoding that help me to fix it.
If I had sent it to Apple I would have lost the data. Thanks again

    iPod software

The software for the iPod is actually on the hard disk. Some of it is in firmware, but a lot of the user-level stuff is on the hard disk (hey, its got 5 gig. to store stuff on and its easier than burning firmware).

Some guy reformatted the iPod for a DOS computer (real smart one there) and it wiped the iPod OS software making it utterly useless.

    Ditto: never, never...

Firmware updates should never be canceled. I imagine the safest course of action before updating is to verify the size of the update application matches the before cranking it up. Unfortunately the Apple site doesn't state the byte size, only that it's 2,2mb. Maybe someone here can post the exact byte size for others to verify.
