MS settlement opponents submit alternative

CNNmoney is reporting that opponents of the federal government's proposed antitrust settlement with Microsoft, including nine states, have submitted an alternative proposal. Among the new, stricter provisions, is one calling for an independent "special master" with more power to curb anticompetitive behavior -- more than the "oversight committee" the U.S. Justice Department calls for. Another, perhaps more significant, provision in the purposed settlement is one that would require the software giant to make its 'Office' productivity suite available on at least three operating systems other than Windows-- including the Mac OS and Linux.

    er ... yeah

So, would Office have to be open source?

Yup, make it available so they can sell even more (or monopolize another platform) ... What the h*** proposal is that???? It's already on Windows and Mac ... whoopdy-doo! ... I think everyone is afraid to actually DO something to MS, so they make these stupid little things up, when they actually have no clue what's going on in the world ... because they all use Windows anyways and probably don't even kow that Office IS available on the Mac ...

    dumb asses.

    or

What would really be funny is proposing that they can no longer support the Intel world. And they have to make every older version of Windows open source, and only keep their choice of either Win2K or XP as their only OS.

    why not...

make the formats (.doc,.xls,.db,.pps) open source so other companies can make compatible products that can read/write in those formats.

    They got to be nuts

If I were Bill, I'd be holding my sides with laughter.

However, Steve has a point. He seemed like he was advising Microsoft to pay these folks off with real money that they already have. A solution that clarifys the threat unto education, yet further clouds Steve's true position somehow.

    Ummmmm..

1.Office *does* exist for the MacOS and it's better on the Mac.

2.Just because something is written to run on Linux doesn't make it open source. Ever hear or Oracle? or how about DB/2? Are they open source? Duh!

    Re: why not...

Yes, that's definitely the right way to do something in this vein.

MS should be required to publish the full file/document specifications and formats for all their major applications. In addition, MS should be required to make public any proposed changes to those specs well in advance (6 months+) of the specs' usage by MS.

That would promote competition. OTOH, telling MS that they must sell their Office suite on even more platforms is stupid beyond belief. It boggles the mind that they keep coming up with proposals that reward rather than punish the guilty party. Bizarre.

    1 Billion

It should be 1 Billion in other companies product to the schools. Apple, Linux and NO! MS products. Plus how will the schools afford the 250 buck per incident to support MS products ?
This is a joke!!! I knew this would happen if Bush got elected! This is the 1 reason I voted for Gore (I HATE Al Gore!) Not only is Bush is going to let MS off the hook, he is going to help them increase there monoply!

    Re: Bush

Bush is the chief of the executive branch. As such, the job of pushing for a strong punishment for Microsoft rests squarely on his shoulders, particularly if he does not agree with the DOJ's settlement offer as I don't.

Now is not the time for settlement. It's the time to criminally prosecute Microsoft's leadership for running a company in violation of the law.
