Netscape has released version 6.2.1 of its popular carbon web browser and email client. The update brings improved stability and several new features; a new address book tab and an improved autocomplete are among the additions.

It's snappier than its previous incarnation, but it has trouble with some webpages (like Omniweb) that use Java.

IE should just quit and DIE! I tried that POS for OSX and after finding Omniweb haven't looked back at that pile. What do you know, yet another small company ON THE MAC was able to OUTPRODUCT the M$ machine. Why wont M$ just die? C post 3.

Actually, IE5 on Mac is the *most* standards-compliant browser available. Anywhere.

Not bad, dare I say it...

Although launching the thing is like pouring cold molasses, and once it actually loads its bloated UI, it does its job of surfing the net quite acceptably!

Now, if it could only move its d*mn preferences where it SHOULD be, under the program menu instead of the OS 9 Edit menu, and get rid of that gawd-awful "About Netscape" page IN HTML (c'mon guys, is it really that hard to create an about window?)

I remember jumping for joy (well, not really) when they finally implemented the platinum interface into their menus under 4.x. (*cough* That only a took a few years... *cough*)

All in all, I'll stick with IE. Thanks though. :)

NS 6.2

I used NS 4.7 for a lot of years then finally went over to the dark side with IE5. I was shocked. M$ is not evil 100% of the time I guess. IE5 rocks!
I finally downloaded 6.1 a couple of months ago. It is slow to boot but other than that I have no complaints.
The UI is smart & simple.
There is no reason what-so-ever for NS to go and die!

Me too!

I made the shift from NS 4.7 to IE 5.0 yesterday, and I too was shocked! -I didnt actually think that M$ could make a good produkt.... BUT I was forced to admit that they could... :/

(I do use Omniweb in OSX, but right now im waiting for OSX.1 in the mail, so its 9.2.1 right now)

Still Sticking With iCab

After testing basicaly all major browsers, only IE, iCab, and NS run my basic portal page properly (It's three freaking lines of java!). Yes, I've tried Mozilla, OmniWeb, Opera, NS, IE, and iCab, but only the last three work correctly. But, NS is HUGE (35 Megs hard drive space, 44 Megs physical memory, 155 Megs Virtual Memory) and I already have a mail, news, and IM program, and NS & IE has NOTHING for filtering abilities (especially compared to iCab), and that I can share my preferences (including those for filters and cache) directly between iCab for 9 and X, there is no contest.

Also taking into account the almost instant-on of iCab, the unique reloading of frames (iCab will reload the currently loaded frame source pages rather than those defined by the frame), iCab for OS X now has secure HTTP ability, and the plug-ins I need work, iCab is my default browser. And, for those very few times I need it, I've kept IE. I see an iCab Pro licence in my future...

which is extremely ugly and is not consistent with whole OS's look and feel.

STANDARDS COMPLIANCE
is the only thing which I think is not so bad about NS.

Omniweb is better (especially for non-english sites) and it's the only one that's a cocoa app.

Internet Explorer plain sucks.

NS 6.2.1

Downloaded the latest NS. Still nothing great. Still loads very slow (but faster than 6.2). Feels snapier.

But I do hate the UI. What the h***?!

And what is with the built-in s**** like AIM, Address Book, etc. If you want to be a swiss-army knife of internet tools, why not make it M-O-D-U-L-A-R so you're users can download what they just need.

Now go and rework on it one more time....go!

Omniweb rules...

Sorry but Netscape is bloated and IE is just plain ugly.. Omniweb is the only cocoa browser and it looks plain cool, plus 4.1 ought to be out soon but they didn't realease it because it wasn't as polished as they would have liked.. You don't see M$ doing that... IE5 was the best browser on the mac platform and it terms of OS9 it still is, but on OSX Omniweb rules the roost with iCab a close second for me... Still nothing makes a page look as pretty as omniweb, and if I'm going to have to stare at text all day infront of an LCD screen it might as well be anti-alaised =]
