Tech: Amazon buys Egghead, MusicNet

Evening tech news: Amazon.com has acquired some assets of Egghead.com, which filed for bankruptcy protection earlier this year, for $6.1 million in cash; Pay-for-play site MusicNet, which will allow users to stream or download tunes using RealPlayer from the libraries of AOL Time Warner, Bertelsmann and EMI Group, starting at $10 per month; and A new viruslike e-mail that purports to be a computer screen saver program is spreading through email, as thousands of users are reporting infection by the worm called "Goner."

    Egghead

    Was one of the great places to purchase software from at one time...they bought Macplace, a very decent Mac mail order company if I remember, and then dropped their entire software line. While they were in the purchasing stages, they had a red phone in store that let you speak to Macplace directly and order Mac products for your home that they wouldn't stock at Egghead. About 3 years ago they stopped doing brick and morter stores in the Washington DC area. Egghead used to be one of the few places you could actually special order software like Informix database. Now look at them...bankrupt, and forced into Amazon. A .com that was...so long to Egghead, it was nice knowing you!
