Steep discount may signal refresh of line imminent

Retailer Best Buy launched a Winter Doorbuster Days sale on Friday. Highlighting the sale is an offer of $200 off on select MacBook Air models. Both the 11-inch and 13-inch models are included with the sale, with pricing ranging from $800 to $1300 depending on configuration and screen size. The sale price is honored both online and in stores, but currently, all models of the laptop are out of stock online.

A quick stock check performed by MacNN in Virginia found a large quantity of all models available for purchase. An associate told us that the entry-level 11-inch model at $800 was "going fast" and "unlikely to last through the close of business Friday."

The sale caps a week where many retailers including Best Buy, Amazon, MacMall, and B&H started discounting the MacBook Air line, starting on the day of Apple's quarterly earnings statement. Apple generally does not allow steep discounts on hardware at its retail partners, spawning rumors of a refresh of the line sooner rather than later. The line was last updated on June 11, 2012.
