c|net notes some users have found a way "to turn a complimentary Mac OS X upgrade CD into a free copy of the operating system itself." In Ocotober, Apple distributed free Mac OS X 10.0-to-10.1 upgrade CDs, for owners of Mac OS X.

    Interesting

I like the comment from Apple that "we trust our users." Quite a contrast to Microsoft--they make it clear they don't trust any of their users, and go out of their way to inconvenience the legitimate ones.

    why is it so difficult?

I paid $129 for 10.04 and then $29.95 for an update disk. I want to install 10.1.1 on an external hard drive and thought I might need to reinstall System X on my computer as well.

But you almost can't do this withough a 10.1 full install disk. I talked to someone at customer service who took my original purchase order number and told me she'd send me a 10.1 install CD for my needs. It never arrived.

Why does Apple make it so difficult to get a full install disk other than spending another $129 for it?

    the trick...

remove the file "CheckforOSX" from the following location on a disk image of the upgrade CD:
    System/Installation/Packages/Essentials.pkg/Contents/Resources/CheckforOSX
You need to right-click (or control click) on the Essentials.pkg file and choose "Show Package Contents" to navigate to the Contents folder. Then, burn the image and enjoy.

    that is too easy

hmm, I guess Apple doesn't care that much about people finding out since it's such an easy hack. thanks for the post

    So????

I think hacking a CD is not a big issue.. for example, ALL Microsoft Software-CD's can be purchased legally for 40 guilders (approx $20).. although.. if you want to use the software legally, you'll have to get a licence ($+++). I bought my OS X software because I think buying it supports the producer (apple in this case) and makes me feel better :)

    Got what they deserved...

If Apple had actually done the right thing and sent all of us who initially bought 10.0 when it was released a FULL install CD, then there would be none of this hassle. The problem is that to reinstall an up to date version of X you have to run the 10.0 installer and then the 10.1 updater. It's plainly a ridiculous and convoluted way of reinstalling the OS. Stuff like this never ceases to amaze me - I mean, if they didn't want the update CD to be hacked then surely they should have made it a pure updater as opposed to a modified full install. They must have realised that people would be trying to find a way to circumvent the hassle of installing the OS twice just to get it to the most recent version. In short, I think they had it coming on this one and in future should pay some more attention to their customers'genuine needs and their sanity.........

    Done

    I own 10.0 original CD.
I went to the local store and got a free 10.1 upgrade CD when released, just showing my original CD.

I recently followed the trick and now I'm happy to save time in re-installing 10.1 directly !!!

Apple was maybe stupid to do this so easy.
    But what ?
I made a bootable back-up copy of the 10.0 CD without any problem. So people having an illegal copy of 10.0 from HL or Carracho are far more outlaws than people owning the original, but prefering a direct 10.1 installation.
