The Washington Post notes Apple "contrarian style" with its foray into consumer electronics with the iPod and its retail strategy "Apple Computer Inc. in recent months has had an entirely different idea about how to weather the economic downturn that has prompted its competitors to retrench and hunker down."

    Apple is healthier anyway

Gateway had gross margins of 8% last quarter while Apple had around 30%. Apple's revenues were lower and they posted a loss for the whole year, but all in all they are healthier than many companies making boxes.

When looking at the numbers its interesting to see that Sun and SGI are about the same as Apple, yet Apple is selling consumer products as opposed to high end workstations and servers.

Still I'd rather be working at or hold stock in Apple than anyone else right now. Gateway is on its way out, Compaq and HP can't seem to hook up and DELL keeps desperately copying Apple's product lines and movements in the market.

Who was it who just about sold Maine over 30k computers *with* wireless networking support (AirPort basestations and cards) and other services? It certainly wasn't DELL or Gateway!

    Huh?

    Apple: $ 7.5 billion
    SGI: $ 450 million
    Sun: $ 44 billion

    They don't even look close.

    Apple a source

for new words. There are always new terms developed to described Apple. Some words are real (but barely used) and some words are made up. Either way, Apple promotes the use of obscure/strange words. Cool!

    Apple Retail Rocks

This is a great article and though i can't say i agree with everything that is said by some of the interviewees, i think it makes a great point about Apple's retail presence. Apple Retail Stores are a move that Apple HAS to make. Steven Baker hit it right on the head when i said that consumers just don't "get Apple" when they waltz into Circuit City or CompUSA. Apple Stores immerse shoppers in a trendy, upbeat, and (at the same time) forward-thinking technology environment that is second to none in the current retail marketplace.

They are doing something that has never been done before - making technology COOL.

As long as Apple can afford to keep the stores open (ie not lose money one them...well, besides this year since Apple already admitted that they don't expect to), it'll give people a sense of confidence in Apple.

Apple, one of the few companies expanding and fortifying their establishment while others are retreating to their roots. Hmm, that was goofy and it makes sense to me, but since I'm an engineer, you must forgive my poor use of purple prose.

Well said, speed. Apple just doesn't cater to the techno-geek crowd, instead they make products that fulfill useful purposes with style. That's why most "gadget" makers don't have the loyal following that Apple does, because without style, there is nothing to differentiate one gadget from another, besides some meaningless specs that are all virtually the same.
