Problem with Australian road detail not limited to Apple Maps

A second area in Australia is having difficulties with Internet map services, this time courtesy of Google Maps. Police in Colac, west of Melbourne, say problems with Google Maps are endangering motorists along the Great Ocean Road and in the southern Otways. Sergeant Nick Buenen says trucks, buses, and tourist vehicles are being directed down Wild Dog Road, which is a one-way dirt road, not built for heavy traffic. Local department of public works VicRoads has denied responsibility, and Google has not commented on the matter, nor fixed the issue.

"My issue is it's a significant safety issue for tourists [and] locals, who are getting the wrong information from their GPSs," the sergeant said. "My concern is that one day we're going to be at the coroner's court [being asked] well what did you do about it?"

On Monday, Police in Victoria, Australia issued a bulletin warning people about an error in iOS 6 Maps which left people stranded. The bulletin noted that during the past few weeks, rescue operations have been needed for a number of people using iOS 6 to drive to the city of Mildura. The firmware is instead leading people into a part of Murray-Sunset National Park over 40 miles away. Apple's issue has since been fixed.

I rest my case! Earlier today I posted "People who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones."

Next thing I know, Google has a screw up. Can't believe Samsung to be so stupid they wouldn't think this could happen to them! But, they ARE stupid. Remember what Forrest Gump said.

I have a Tom-Tom GPS device in my car. It tells me to bear right when there is no other option. It tells me to turn left when the only thing on my left is a guard rail. It displays roads that aren't there and omits roads that are. I'd say it was "correct" about 90-95% of the time. But not 100%. And this is a company whose business is GPS. So no one is "perfect", in my opinion. Here are some amusing links...

Samsung are stupid? Might want to look in the mirror there. Samsung Galaxy SIII uses Navigon maps, which is what their marketing campaign was about.

Secondly, this isn't actually an error. It's a legitimate route to Colac from Skene's Creek. The problem is that it's a dicky one-lane dirt road so it's not suitable for certain types of vehicles. I'd imagine most people would just turn their cars around which is presumably what they're doing as this hasn't caused any issues. Unlike the six people who needed to be rescued from the middle of nowhere North of Mildura...

Riiiiiight, Mr. Samsung...the point is Samsung is in no position to state the safety of their device regardless of how you might merit the danger.

because your opinion of how people should interpret directions are the only valid ones, right? Obviously law enforcement's opinion isn't relevant since it doesn't agree with yours...
