Apple today announced that one million copies of QuickTime 5 are being downloaded every three days: "The rate of QuickTime 5 downloads has steadily increased since its launch in April, putting QuickTime 5 on track to exceed 100 million downloads in its first year of distribution." The press release notes that news, entertainment and virtual reality (VR) content on popular web sites such as CNN, NPR, HBO, Apple's movie trailer site, and Honda have helped drive adoption of its streaming format. Apple also noted that it has sold more than 1 million copies of QuickTime Pro ($30 upgrade).

    Compared to...

What are the figures for Real Networks (rate and total DLs)
    And Windows Media Player?

Personally, my biggest problem with Real is that it asks for 64MB ram, commandeers your OS, Internet Settings, etc. every so often even after you ask it nicely not to... and saving is a rarity without even the workarounds of QT.

And WMP? No real advantage to this format or to the operation of the player, etc. In a Windows world that had nothing else, it might have been the lead choice - but not for anyone else.

    QT still no angel

it doesn't take over my entire computer but it does demand to be associated with .PNG files in my browser. My browser can handle PNGs just fine, thank you.

    $30,000,000

So they've made nearly $30,000,000 on QTPro? That's great! I bet that covers the cost of development.

    Crikey!

Wow, there are a lot of people in this world if that's how many are downloading quicktime every day. That's the population of my country in ten days. Bloody h***.

    Mandatory Downloads

Well...Another factor with the so many downloads is the mandatory updates that need to take place. Goto the site right now, with qt 5.0 or 5.0.1. You can't watch the trailers. You MUST update to 5.0.2. So, if I downloaded 5.0.1 yesterday, I've gotta download 5.0.2 today. Wait a sec, I'm still only one user, but have downloaded QT twice...hmm...

well..MS and Real do the same marketing ploys too...but Apple has one too many time been mislead to the public because of the figures that so many of the PC companies have come up with to make themselves look good, when in sense, they really haven't.

    QT need a divx-like codec

Well, the 5.0.1 -- 5.0.2 upgrade I believe was mostly because Sorenson 3 wasn't ready to ship in 5.0.1. And since Sorenson 3 is giving much better result in sharpness and filesize over Sorenson 2 the trailers team are using it to compress the trailers. Simple.

But, QuickTime on PC still isn't very good after all. It's flickering and on some videocards and it's a bit slow and somewhat buggy too. And why isn't there a decent DivX-like codec in QuickTime. The one for PC AVI is so incredibly fast, it compresses in no time. Sorenson 3 is the only internet-standard-codec in QuickTime and it takes AGES to compress.

    DiVx = pants

Divx is just a hack, not a proper codec but it is available for Quicktime - it called 3ivx delta. But I would bother, all the DIVX and XVID Codecs are there almost purely to rip off DVDs and are not efficient in any way.
You say on PC with 'some video cards' it flickers, just how many different vieo cards for PCs are there out there, and would you expect Apple to have tested QT on each one? One of the problems of the PC platform, no consistancy.

You say Sorenson 3 is the only internet standard codec, what about H.26x, Sorenson 2, VP3,

    Thanks MS

My guess is the cause of the jump is MS's removal of the EMBED tag from IE.

This causes QT on WIndows to use the ActiveX architecture, which enables automatic downloads/installs (pretty nifty, in fact) on Windows whenever required.

    QT for Windows sucks...

There is no good reason why Quicktime for PC is so bad and crappy especially with STANDARD video cards like Geforce ones.

Quicktime is also very slow when you resize a window even with my Geforce 3 Ti 200 on my Athlon XP 1800 :(

Real Player is really faster and Windows Media Player is the best one on Windows machines (very fast especially in resizing, and the quality is slighty better than Real).

Quicktime is only good for high bandwith and trailers. It sucks in streaming.
