Apple today announced that one million copies of QuickTime 5 are being downloaded every three days: "The rate of QuickTime 5 downloads has steadily increased since its launch in April, putting QuickTime 5 on track to exceed 100 million downloads in its first year of distribution." The press release notes that news, entertainment and virtual reality (VR) content on popular web sites such as CNN, NPR, HBO, Apple's movie trailer site, and Honda have helped drive adoption of its streaming format. Apple also noted that it has sold more than 1 million copies of QuickTime Pro ($30 upgrade).

What are the figures for Real Networks (rate and total DLs)
And Windows Media Player?
Personally, my biggest problem with Real is that it asks for 64MB ram, commandeers your OS, Internet Settings, etc. every so often even after you ask it nicely not to... and saving is a rarity without even the workarounds of QT.
And WMP? No real advantage to this format or to the operation of the player, etc. In a Windows world that had nothing else, it might have been the lead choice - but not for anyone else.
