Reader: Office v. X product key issues

Nathan Wolek writes about problems with product keys that ship with Office v. X, confirming our own experience which required a call to Microsoft Tech support and a "trial and error" entry of product keys until it worked:

"My copy of Office X arrived yesterday after placing my order on 11/19 via the Microsoft web site. The only problem I had was that the included key was invalid. Called up product support and the lady on the phone told me she had gotten plenty of calls like mine. Apparently 3000 or so copies went out with invalid keys. She promptly gave me a new one and things have been fine since. Maybe this issue is related to the shipping delays others have experienced. They might be trying to contain this key problem by holding back until new keys are generated and printed up. Just a thought."

    How long would that take?

Really -how long would it take to "print up" a few more keys? Was it really necessary for them to stop shipments and/or delay then by the 15-20 business days that the Apple Store is quoting? Or could they have allowed some to ship, set up a temporary phone line to get working licenses, and just fixed the problem for those that hadn't been manufactured/packaged yet?

15-20 business days is quite some time to come up with a 16 character CD code...

    this is mostly correct

apparently MS is having problems getting enough copies of WinXP out the door as well. i saw an article on Cnet or ZDNet. it has to do with what the keys are printed ON. MS has become hyper sensitive to pirating and includes certificates of authenticity with everything and the certificates have holograms and such to prevent counterfeiting. i think they've got more security features than a $100 bill.

but probably getting new certificates printed is the gating factor here. mine's been pushed back until january 14th!

    Product Keys

For my $149 upgrade package, the keys are printed on a sticker that is inside the booklet holding the CD. I can see how it would take a while to pull, verify, and replace these. I, too, had to call to get a new key... after being on hold (long distance) for about 10 minutes, I gave the rep my old (bad) key, and was given a new key after another brief hold. Then she offered to wait until I was sure it worked, and offered to email it to me. Probably a 15-20 minute call all told.

At least I got to smile at the end: When registering the software online, there is a survey question asking you to rate your opinion of Microsoft on a 1-10 scale, based on this product experience... (ahem)
