Readers continue to report further delays in delivery of Microsoft's Office v. X, including several forwarded notices of delays from the Apple Store. (Meanwhile, Microsoft confirms that circulating reports of a "1-year license agreement" are false.)

    Heh heh

"...Microsoft confirms that circulating reports of a '1-year license agreement' are false." Yes, those rumors are false, it is a six-month license agreement. All the better to ream the consumer! OK, so I am joking. So sue me.

    horrible

I personally have had a horrible order experience. First I placed my order on the announcement day at 10am- I had to do it on the phone because the internet system was down. It turned out that the phone system was down too, because they had to take the order on paper. Alas, I was assured it would ship via US Mail (with no other option!) the next day. I called back the next night to check up, and they said the order hadn't gone in. After a few more calls they said that my credit card number was invalid, which was a lie because I recorded the call and had them read it back to me (twice!). They then admitted that they had put the product on backorder and it would ship till Jaunary 12! So being a student I tried for the $200 route with the academic upgrade... again, no versions seem to even exist! Compare that to tripping over Office XP everywhere... Today I called for an explanation and after being on hold for 30 minutes they hung up on me without picking it back up. I am trying to give them money, and they almost refuse! And they lie about it! Has anyone gotten an academic version of the product? Where? Shrug/Grunt.

    WHY????

I too have gotten three notices now from the Apple store -the first two delaying shipping for 5 business days, the most recent (last night) delaying 10-15 business days.

What's the f'ing problem here? Did Mircosoft's CD making plant break down? Was MS shipping the CDs from Washington to the rest of the US via Afghanistan? Is it that they screwed up the licenses so badly they needed to recall everything and burn new CDs (so we don't all call in with invalid license numbers?) What's the deal?

    Hmmm, bugs maybe?

I wonder if they're delaying to fix stuff. Seems like a perfectly valid Microsoft tactic to me. I got my upgrade disc and had to call to get a new CD key because the one it came with didn't work. Entourage is virtually worthless at the moment because it crashes every, yes every, time it tries to fetch mail. On the plus side, Microsoft was very quick and helpful with the CD key issue. It will be interesting to see how fast they respond to the Entourage issue. Thank you Apple for Mail.app.

    Reason for the delay

They are burning the CD's using Windows XP and it keeps crashing. They can only burn 2 CD's between reboots...

    I like your reason...

I think you may be right about the delay. =) It is amazing to me that a company as large as MS did not have a contingency plan. I assume it is a problem with the CD duplication, but of course, they are not going to tell us.

These things do happen, but when the project is important, you have a backup plan. You line up multiple vendors, etc.

I can wait until Jan. My current copy of Office 2001 is working just fine in Classic. There are no new features that I absolutely have to have, anyway. Until an OS X native Palm Desktop and conduits are released, I will still have to use Entourage 2001 anyway for hot syncing my handheld. I only bought the upgrade because of the "low" price. :)

Stay calm, everyone. These things happen all the time. We don't have to like them, but we can't have a hemmorage every time it does happen.

    stole it, trashed it

I downloaded it from a carracho site (It feels really good to steal from MS). Then I deleted it.

It's just a dull word processor and a spreadsheet, nothing to get excited about, or pay an insane amount of money for.

    Office v.X good here

I ordered my Office X upgrade via the web from microsoft on 11/19, received it yesterday, had the product key problem and got a new product key this morning by phone. Entourage runs great as well as the other programs. I'm running Office X on a Powerbook G3/500 with 1 GB ram OS 10.1.1 .... just want you to know it's working for some people but I sympathize with the order and other tech glitches some are having.
