Windows AFP servers? i.e. Windows Apple File Protocol? What's that? AFP running on Windows? Or Microsoft's own implementation of AFP? Or something else entirely and I'm just being stupid?

    Windows AFP

Windows AFP is AFP on a Windows server. aka Macintosh Services for Windows NT.
As far as I know, it's real AFP (not some Microsoft clone), but it uses slightly different authentication. That's probably due to how Windows servers handle logins. So, the UAM acts as a go-between from the Chooser/Network Browser/Connect To... by encrypting your password into the format that the Windows server wants to recieve it.
