Sony launches native Reader app for iOS

Syncs books from other devices

Sony has launched an official Reader app for iOS. The software lets people access content bought for Sony's proprietary e-reading platform, syncing a user's titles through cloud storage. Many common features are included, such as bookmarks, day and night modes, and customizable font sizes and contrast. Some library management options include support for personalized collections.

The app marks a late entry from Sony into iOS support. Companies like Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Kobo have long had a presence on iOS, using their apps to encourage adoption of dedicated e-reading hardware. Sony is a relatively minor player in e-books though, and may not have been in a rush to support iOS; it already has an Android Reader app and Android-based phones and tablets.

Yawn. At this rate maybe Sony will produce another iOS app, relevant to people other than those who made the mistake of buying their DRM books, before 2015.

This is about five years too late. The Sony of the once-popular Walkman cassette players missed the boat with music players and ereaders.

Of course, both ebook market-dominating Amazon and Apple are making the same basic mistake Sony did, sticking with DRM-ridden, non-standard, proprietary schemes. Someday, customers are going to wake up and discover all the negatives of that.

If another major player comes along with a ebook distribution scheme as buyer friendly as that of O'Reilly and with well-designed reader apps for all the major platforms, they could leave Amazon and Apple in the dust.

When you buy an ebook from O'Reilly, you really buy it. You get multiple, DRM-free formats and online storage with them. It'd be great if their platform could be expanded to offer ebooks directly from multiple publishers.
