New Foldaway rackmounts for 15" ASD

updated 12:15 pm EST, Mon November 26, 2001

", 0, 0);

Marathon Computer is now shipping new Foldaway rackmounts designed to fit the Apple 15" Studio Display in a 2U space: the rackmounts allow you to "mount your existing Apple Studio Display in any industry-standard 19" equipment rack -- with a new twist: when the display is not in use, the rackmount retracts into a mere 2U. When in use, the display rests in front of your rack." The lightweight steel mounts have a glossy metallic silver finish and are $225.

    Rackmount product line

    Neat! I just checked out these guys' page and they have a whole rackmount Mac product line. I guess I should've known that someone would take up the baton Apple dropped.

    Particularly neato is their iRack, which puts the guts of an iMac (minus monitor, of course) in a 1U rack module. Pity it adds a fan, though. Wonder how noisy it is...

    iRack

    The iMac rev A-D that you mount in the iRack has a larger fan than what is in the small 1U case. The two iRacks in my rack make less noise than my 10/100 switch with its dual fans. I'm hoping that the Sonnet iHarmony upgrade will fit in the iRack, so I can add speed and FireWire to the shortest G3 Mac on the planet.

    Fans

    Huh. I didn't realize that 10/100 switches (I'm used to 10-only hubs) had fans. I also didn't realize ANY iMacs had fans! I thought that was a big part of the appeal -- the fanless design. I presume the fan at least doesn't turn on except when it's needed (like the iBook)?
