Apple to pay Swiss Federal Railways for iOS 6 Clock app

updated 10:08 am EDT, Fri October 12, 2012

", 0, 0);

Apple has agreed to pay Swiss Federal Railways, better known as SBB, for the use of its clock design in the iOS 6 Clock app. Shortly after iOS 6 debuted, SBB and watchmaker Mondaine -- an SBB licensee -- said they were considering some form of action against Apple, since the analog-style displays in Clock are verbatim replicas of an SBB design. A few days later, SBB mentioned that talks with Apple were impending.

Neither Apple nor SBB has disclosed how much the licensing deal is worth. That's relatively common in such agreements however, and particularly so with Apple, which almost never publicly announces the amount of money it spends on business transactions.

    So Apple rips somebody off and tries to get away with it and only when threatened with legal action do they pay.
    Why couldn't Apple have asked up front instead of stealing someone else's design?
    No irony here...move along...

    One. Single. Post.

    I could go on a diatribe here about how Apple might have figured that a clock on a tablet is not the same thing as a physical clock design, and decided they'd pay tribute to a classic design in their digital interpretation, or how when gentle rumblings were heard from SBB, Apple *immediately* contacted them to discuss licensing, or how they might have just waited for litigation (and stood a good chance of winning), but instead opted for immediately doing the right thing when it turned out that the design holders were unhappy, but...why bother?

    It won't convince the nay-brayers, and what's a piss in the wind against a shitful of brain?

    Okay, you trolls ... time to put up or shut up.

    What evidence do you have that Spheric Harlot's version of events (which certainly rings more true) is not the case?

    What evidence do you have YOUR version of events is true?

    Looking forward to seeing you prove your case. If you can't prove your case, can you explain on what facts you made up the version of events you imagined happened? Or why you felt compelled to put your fantasies on display?

    Apple spent no time to resolve the case.

    Also note that the SBB design holders expressly stated that they weren't necessarily after a financial settlement.

    You can assume that sales of their licensed products are skyrocketing due to the publicity right now.
