Richard Kim writes that "Office V.X comes with a OS X version of Windows Media Player in the Value Pack installer that comes on the CD." (It is not yet available on the Web.)

    codecs missing

i tried to play several clips from the windowsmedia.com site with the osx wmp and it often reported that the codec required was missing. typically this resulted in video but no audio. kindof annoying if you're trying to watch music videos.. i had to modify the helpers in ie5.1 to tell it to use the new wmp and not launch classic.

otherwise it seems to be okay, though. won't keep playing in the dock like quicktime but hey, what do you expect? it will play fullscreen pretty well now (earlier betas would crash when you tried to go fullscreen for me).

hopefully they'll release those codecs soon. strangely, when you go to "update wmp" in the help menu it takes you to a web site that detects you're using "macintosh" and offers to download the 7.0.1 wmp (for classic). strange that they'd release this and not update their website..

anyone know what's up with carbonizing the real player? it would be the last of the media players we need to really use osx for multimedia.

    real who?

realplayer? tell me about it. My favorite radio station (kube93 www.kube93.com) in seattle broadcasts in useless realaudio. I have to boot into os 9 to listen to them as playing audio in classic mode results in choppy playback when you do anything more strenuous than move the mouse. I wish apple would introduce the ability to play back RA files in quicktime player. Realplayer (even for the PC) is a pile of junk. Its probably just a pipedream, but it would be nice to have a decent player which played realplayer files.

does it work on its own?

would be nice to know if the WMP installation will work without installing office.

    WMP X and RP

    1) WMP for X is even more crippled than the Classic version. It can't play Windows Media Audio tracks, which account for the sound in the majority of Windows Media files out there. Extremely disappointing.

    2) I'm beginning to doubt that Real has any interest in supporting OS X. The company is nearing the brink, financially, and expanding their platform support is probably really low on their list. By the way, Apple can't just incorporate support into Quicktime because the codec is proprietary and Real doesn't seem too interested in licensing it.
