The SJ Mercury News talks about the business behind the MacBU, Microsoft's Mac-focused software group and the complex relationship between Apple and Microssoft. The article notes that MacBU expects to sell $30 million worth of Office v.X software between now and the end of the year and also that Microsoft "no longer holds any of the $150 million in Apple stock it bought four years ago."

    No longer holds?

I thought the stock wasn't exactly normal stock. I know it was non-voting stock. Maybe it could still be sold, but I almost thought it was supposed to be tied into the five-year nature of the agreement somehow. Could be wrong.

    Re: No longer holds?

The MS stock was both non voting and couldn't be vested for 3 years from the sale. I beleive the whole deal went down in 1997, so they are well vested by now and probably sold ASAP.

That deal, from a financial prospective, was a donation, not a financial investment. But then again, think about this... the MacBU at MS has 170 employees (for Office, Explorer, Outlook and a few other things). They plan on making US$30M on Office between the middle of November and the new year... that's revenue of about $175,000 per employee for just one month of operation on a product with virtually $0 cost to reproduce... Not a bad deal if you ask me.
