Mediafour announces XPod software for iPod

Mediafour today officially announced its XPod software, which offers access to iPod music from the Windows operating system. Compatible with Windows Me, 2000, or XP, the software will transfer MP3, AIFF and WAV files to the iPod. Mediafour says it plans to include automatic transcoding of WMA files to MP3 in a subsequent release.

Thinking that Windows XP won't encode MP3 out of the box... and now this... again and again, MP3 beats WMA even though Microsoft tries to push it as a web standard!

Have you ever got a WMA come up in a Gnutella search?

mac = expensive?

So you have your cheap, bottom-feeding WindowsXP box, here come the hidden costs. After the 400 bucks for the iPod, you have to pay extra for a firewire card, the XPod software *and* the amputated mp3 encoding stuff, setting you back at least 100 dollars more. (i'm generously assuming you can get all this working without outside help and within this lifetime).

Heh.

The iPod costs as much as some lowly PCs. :)

I love my iPod. Install OS X on it and save the rest for MP3s. Boot off it, troubleshoot a sad Mac, and at the end of the day, listen to more than 600 songs still. The best, guys.

Wonderful News!

I'm SO happy that winblowz users are going to get access to using an iPud before the 20 million Mac owners/users who have machines that are perfectly functional, but won't run 9.2.1, required for iTunez2. Way ta go Stevey! Stick it to the rest of us..

could it be because that 50% of the mac community including prepress, web dev, etc, has no reason to upgrade until there apps become native in osx a fairly new os that still has many features that are still being ironed out? so your telling this guy to get osx just so he can use ipod? whats the price up to now? 520 plus tax? dont go nuts on the guy. many people have many reasons not to upgrade to osx software aside.

as for ipod on the peecee once they have a nibble maybe theyll take the byte.

Uhmmm... the iPod only requires 9.2.1 or greater, not MacOS X. This means your argument is pretty much null and void since prepress, web dev, etc. can all upgrade to 9.2.1 and still use their apps.

The first guy was complaining that he can't upgrade to 9.2.1 - which means he has a really old Mac. Sorry buddy, but it's time to upgrade.

Wah! Apple won't let me watch DVDs on a Mac Plus, how dare they stick it to us.

I am quite certain 9.2.1 can only run on machines OSX can run on.

also for 9.2.1 it was recomended that you only upgrade to that if your using osx. otherwise if you dont use osx then theres no reason to upgrade? so i assumed you have osx to use 9.2.1 effectively? after all it was only updated for osx was it not?

as for apple having its users "upgrade" to use certain things because they want to make money, how bout competing with peecees price wise which is the number one thing the consumer looks for? h*** why dont they come out with new gas that can only be used by new cars? why dont we kick everyone off the internet with a 56k modem because thier slowing the infrastructre down? it may come as a suprise to you but the average user doesnt need the latest and greatest games. they dont need dvd, cdrw, digital cameras, 256 megs of ram.

they make money on all products they sell. now they are trying to make money the microsoft way by cutting people off WHO HAVE NO REASON to upgrade and DONT NEED TO. wade down osx with so many graphics that the os runs sluggishly on computers so u need to upgrade? sounds good to me! i cant live without transluecent shading on my menus. that is progress. but if they gave you a option to shave all the eye candy away people with older SUPPORTED computers could run osx. cmon apple says osx is suported on all but the early g3 powerbook dealy. do you think a imac 266 could run osx? we all know how apple needs to make money and thats through computers that are fast with up to date technology (even a year behind would be nice) with a price tag that meets the consumer in the pocket and makes them think maybe the SLIGHTLY higher price is QUALITY. coming on and flaming a guy who has a firewire port but cant run 9.2.1 is a joke when peecees at half apples recomended speed can use ipod. my friend got a free firewire card with his 3d card and stuck it in his old pentium since he already had one. he uses my firewire cdrw to burn backups at 2x when he needs to instead of pulling his internal. since when does apple have to bullishy force users to upgrade when they DONT NEED TO. and you support this?

It doesn't matter if you can run system X or 9.2, that can be installed on most G3's. You need a firewire port to play with an iPod. Firewire = pretty new Mac. That's just the way it is. New gadgets = money.

Apart from that I'm with Berserkerintosh. His choice of handle is his and his opinions are never personal attacks on other readers. I'd like to keep it like that.

I run X on a rev A iMac which I use as a mp3 server connected to my home entertainment system. Runs like a dream. The iMac has a USB 20 gb HD conneceted to it and I spend a long weekend ripping most of my CD's. Sad, I know, but it works.
