Their Mac section is now called 'Mac Computing' rather than Mac CPUs as it was in the past. Search on PowerMac and no computers are listed. Have they quit selling Macs or is a major product announcement in the works?"

    I wouldn't buy a Mac...

...from them anymore. Not since they are/will be merging with Fry's Electronics... after the way Fry's handled the free upgrade to 10.1 program, I wouldn't want to give them my business for ANYTHING.

    Something Big Coming?

What on earth could be so big that Outpost stops selling every Mac? Nothing. Apple is not replacing their entire line. Way to be optimistic, MacNN.

    I found a Powerbook G4

Except it is an old model at the old price!

I think nobody has updated their website. $2995 for a Powerbook G4 500. Amazing. How could they!

    I wrote to Outpost

    service@outpost.com the following letter:

    Dear Outpost,
It is near impossible to find any of Apple's hardware on your website. I did
find one item: http://shop2.outpost.com/product/3171580 and what did it say?
Powerbook G4/500 at $2995. That's the old Powerbook at the old price. It has
since dropped to $2000 on the common market. Check places like
http://www.clubmac.com and http://www.macconnection.com. You used to sell
Apple PowerMac G4s, iMacs, iBooks, and Powerbooks that were current. I even
helped my mom get a PowerMac G4 from you. Software, RAM, and peripherals I see

are there, but when you go to your website map:
http://shop2.outpost.com/template/maps/index/ all the Mac hardware links are
dead and go nowhere for iMacs, Powermacs and Cubes (by the way, the Cube hasn't
been available since July!). or iBooks and Powerbooks. Both lead to a bad link
page. If I look G4 or G3 I still can't find anything but the Powerbook
mentioned before. Please fix your website so it is current.

    Thank you.
    Sincerely,

I suggest everyone else who wants to keep an Apple retailer current do the same!

Dude, if you notice the quotes, those are the comments of the reader that sent in the note, NOT MacNN's.

    transitional mess...

that's my guess, anyway. fry's probably has it's own way to handle the mac crowd, and they're starting to make the transition now (and probably starting with the mac stuff first, since it's smaller and more manageable).

this is, however, just a guess on my part, and has no foundation in any fact whatsoever. but i like it that way. :-)

    Pick up the phone...

Just spoke with them. They're temporarily off while they work out details with Apple & Fry's. They'll be back, they didn't have an ETA, this was a CS rep - I could try and get Darryl, but it sounds like the straight story.

    The real story

you heard it hear first. Outpost decided to scrap everything because Apple is coming out with the G5 on Jan 1st which will make every other product obsolete and they no longer see the older products as profitable. Apparently, because there will be an initial shortage of G5s, Outpost has signed on to be the sole carrier of them outside of the Apple Store. they are in no way leaving the Mac market, just blazing the trail in fact!
