OS X SCSI CD-RW Helper fixes bug

Mac OS X SCSI CD-RW Helper, from El Gato Software, improves OS X compatibility with some SCSI-based CD-RW mechanisms: "[it] fixes a minor bug in Apple's driver for devices that support the MMC standard (Multi Media Command set). Virtually all CD-RW drives shipped in the last three years support some flavor of the MMC standard." It is available as an unsupported, freeware kernel extension and requires Roxio's toast, as Apple's DiscBurner and iTunes products do not support SCSI drives.

    SCSI Helper and 10.1.1

After learning about SCSIHelper for the first time, I downloaded and installed it, thinking it would allow me to use my external SCSI Yamaha CD-RW. I installed it and upon reboot, got a kernel panic. Had to boot from a 9.1 emergency CD to ferret out the SCSIHelper kernel extension to get my OS X install working again.

Note that I'm using X 10.1.1, and I it's unclear from the developer's web page if this version of his software is compatible with 10.1.1.

    GREAT!

Works perfectly. b/w G3, 10.1.1, Yamaha CRW 4260, Adaptec 2906. The trick is to reinstall iTunes 2.0.1 afterwards (!!) Then Finder and Toast beta will recognize the drive.

    Sorked after iTunes reins

I installed it and restarted, but it still didn't work. Then, following a tip on versiontracker, I reinstalled iTunes 2, and all of a sudden, Toast saw my SCSI CD-R drive and was able to burn. This is an old 4x panasonic (Matshita) CW-7502 CD-R drive that I had little hopes for OS X support. If it worked with minee, it has a good chance of working with yours. I'm sooooooo happy, now burning a CD on my old SCSI CD burner in OS 10.1.1. I have a G4/466, 512 MB RAM, and an Apple Adaptec 2906 based SCSI card.

    itunes 2.0.1...

...still won't install. After iTunes 2.0 wiped about 55GB of my data clean, the iTunes 2.0.1 installer still wun work--even when logged in as root--whgen i try to install it on my OS X partition. I end up istalling it on another partition, and then manually bringing over the files, so how can I simply reinstall it to get this working??

    Fantastic!

I also have a LaCie (Matsushita) CW-7502 - I'll get the software and give it a try. Thanks for the tip - I never thought I'd be able to get this going on X and now I can. Absolutely great!
