Morning tech news: Palm yesterday announced the completion of its acquisition of substantially all of the intellectual property and other technology assets of Be, Inc. for $11 million in Palm stock and that it has hired several key members of Be's engineering team; office workers are spending double the amount of the time on instant messaging, according to a Jupiter Media Metrix report that also notes that AOL is the leading brand at both home and work, but Yahoo and Microsoft were "aggressively increasing their reach and total usage minutes;" and Yahoo! will start allowing advertisers to pay to be listed in results generated by the site's search engine.

    Ha ha!

Ha ha! Poooor Be. You would'nt take Apple's $400 million to sell your OS to become the next MacOS, and now look at you...nothing more than a gutter OS begging for users. You're getting what you deserve, being reduced to a handheld OS. Maybe Palm will change the name from BeOS to POS. Piece Of Sh*t.

I'm not exactly sure here, but wasn't it *Apple* who turned down *Be's* offer? Instead, they opted for the NeXT-based Rhapsody, along with the merger to get Steve Jobs back.

    i like ATAT's take...

...from a couple days ago, when they mentioned what greayt karmic justice it would be if, once palm finished acquiring be, and if the rumors of sculley coming in as new ceo of palm came true, then steve-o could buy out all of palm's $300+ million in assets, get both operating systems, and kick sculley out of his own board of directors...

    Actually...

It was a little of both. Apple and Be were still in the 'shall we dance?' stage of negotiation, but Be was playing hard to get. The Notorious Frenchman wanted lots and lots of revenge cash...how much more was not certain, but they were waiting for Apple to sweeten the deal. About this time, Steve Job's minions caught wind of the stalled deal and immediately moved to take advantage. Before Be knew what happened, they were dumped faster than...than....than something dumped by an enormous dumping thing.

If Be had accepted Apple's offer immediately, the "Second Coming," the iMac and OS X as we know it would not have happened.

And Apple would have probably been bought out by someone by now...

    Be = buyout deterrent?

I think Palm realizes Apple would rather not be associated with Be since :
    1. Be was already a reject for a new OS, and
    2. Be runs on Intel chips, and since Apple doesn't even acknowledge they run Intel boxes in test labs I'm sure they don't like the prospect of actually maintaining Be licenses on Intel machines.

So, what better company to aquire to ward off an Apple buy-out? Instant Apple-repellant!

actually, beos pro 5.0 (the last edition) DID run on powerpc chips (pre-g3). i should know - it's running on a separate partition on my powermac 6400 at home. granted, it doesn't do very much, but it is working. ;-)

    Be OS was cool

I would love to see the BeOS go open source... I remember it as being very portable... it made the jump from PPC to X86 in a little over a month, and Be didn't really have that many people working on it.

Palm + BeOS + RISC PDA

    Wow!

Palm elegance -- the m505 is the sleekest piece of metal ever manufactured.

Be coding knowhow -- these guys could code their way past the sound barrier.

RISC -- a magnitude more powerful than the dinky li'l DragonBall chip that generation 1 Palms have used.

This thing is going to be a PocketPC annihilator!!!!
